You should have: An exam paper Lined paper AT LEAST one pen! Three different coloured highlighters

2 Question 3a – 30 MINUTES Read the question and UNDERLINE key words
Read through PASSAGE B and highlight the things you can use for your bullet points Write down 20 bullet points then cross out 5 you don’t need COUNT! Do you have JUST 15? You will only get marks for the first 15 points the examiner sees! Cross out the points you think are your WEAKEST, or which REPEAT something else…

Question 3a – 30 MINUTES Read the question and UNDERLINE key words Read through PASSAGE B and highlight the things you can use for your bullet points Write down 20 bullet points then cross out 5 you don’t need “no shops” “there are no shops” Check! Have you spelled the key words correctly? Does every point make sense as a sentence by itself? (read it through to yourself to make sure – does it have a verb?!) …is…was…are…be…have…

4 Question 3b – 15 MINUTES You will now need to write up your
bullet points into full sentences as a SUMMARY. Separate your 15 bullet points into 3 groups (you can do this by topic, or if it’s easier, just take the first 5, the next 5 and the next 5!) For each group, write up a paragraph of the points: IN YOUR OWN WORDS IN FULL SENTENCES WRITE A PARAGRAPH FOR EACH GROUP

5 Question 3b – 15 MINUTES You will now need to write up your
bullet points into full sentences as a SUMMARY. Separate your 15 bullet points into 3 groups (you can do this by topic, or if it’s easier, just take the first 5, the next 5 and the next 5!) For each group, write up a paragraph of the points: IN YOUR OWN WORDS IN FULL SENTENCES WRITE A PARAGRAPH FOR EACH GROUP Check! Have you spelled the key words correctly? Have you written in paragraphs? (put a // in to show where they should go if you’ve missed them!) Have you used full stops and capital letters? Remember – NO QUOTES! You will lose a lot of marks if you used lines from the text – cross them out now!

6 Question 2 – 25 MINUTES Read the question and UNDERLINE key words
Find the passages/paragraphs it is asking you to look at and put a bracket round them Read through the required paragraphs in PASSAGE A and highlight JUICY images Write one simple paragraph for each word/phrase: “quote” This means… The effect of this is… OR This suggests/creates/evokes/highlights…

Question MINUTES Read the question. Do they give you an opening line? Highlight the three bullet points Read through PASSAGE A and underline the ideas and comments you could use for each bullet point The examiner will mark your answer using a tally chart and mark off the points you cover… you need EQUAL coverage of the three bullet points… 1 2 3 DETAIL AND DEVELOPMENT III IIII I II IIII

10 Character development ANYTHING else you can think of!
Question MINUTES Find details in the text which you could expand on using your own imagination…write these ideas down (3 or 4)… Character development Descriptive detail Describe emotions ANYTHING else you can think of!

11 Question 1 - 45 MINUTES Now you have your points,
decide how you want to structure your response – remember, the best answers will do something DIFFERENT to the original text. You do not have to write your ideas up in the same order! Write your response IN PARAGRAPHS IN FULL SENTENCES IN YOUR OWN WORDS!!! Think! What kind of text are you being asked to write? Make sure you get the layout, audience and tone right!
