Potential and Kinetic Energy: Energy Partners Essential Question: How do potential and kinetic energy transform in a system?

What is energy? Energy is the driving force for the universe. It is the ability of a system to do work.

Law of Conservation of Energy  The Law of Conservation of Energy states that energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only be transformed from one form to another. Law of Conservation of Energy

 Mechanical Energy is the energy associated with motion and the position of an object.  The sum of all potential and kinetic energy in a system is mechanical energy.

Potential Energy - stored energy There are 3 types of potential energy: 1. gravitational EX: boulder at the top of a hill 2. elastic EX: rubber band 3. chemical EX: battery

A slinky has stored energy when its coils are pulled back. Elastic Potential Energy

Kinetic Energy - energy in motion

The skier has kinetic energy because he is moving down the slope.

The basketball has kinetic energy because it is moving.

What type of energy does the wind up toy exhibit? Wind up the toy at your table and hold it still. What type of energy does it have? Let the toy go until it stops. What type of energy does it have while it is moving? What causes this transformation of energy?

K P P K  When an object has more potential energy, it has less kinetic energy.  When an object has more kinetic energy, it has less potential energy.

Potential & Kinetic Energy In order for the ball to be set in motion, a force has to act upon it (my hand tossing it up in the air). Label the points where the ball has the most POTENTIAL energy and the points where the ball has the most KINETIC energy. Remember, the higher an object, the higher its gravitational potential energy.
