Myths & Facts

Video For The Record Resource around safer partying Filmed by students – for students

Video Debriefing Filmmaker, Jay Prychidny Based on real life situation (but no it wasn’t an actual party in the video) Characters: Julia (tried to beat her tequila record) Tim (annoying clown) Daniel (the help) Jess (Julia’s girlfriend) Jay (behind the camera) Peter (party host)

Small Group Discussions Alcohol overdose (A) Sexual decision making (B) Mixing alcohol & other drugs (C) Reducing risks (D) Identify Recorder / Reporter for each group

Alcohol Overdose Can take 90 minutes after you stop drinking before highest level of intoxication – Really drunk before you actually know it! Women more susceptible than men – but guys aren’t off the hook either! The biggie: Choking to death on your own vomit

Signs of Alcohol Overdose Symptoms of alcohol poisoning: Vomiting Passed out Difficult to awaken Slow, shallow breathing Confusion Seizures Slow breathing (less than eight breaths a minute) Irregular breathing (a gap of more than 10 seconds between breaths) Blue-tinged skin or pale skin Low body temperature (hypothermia) What to do? Stay with the person Put in recovery position Help for help

Recovery Position

Sexual Decision Making Alcohol most common drug used in acts of sexual violence/assaults You can’t consent when you’re drunk Judgment and behavior impacted by alcohol/other drugs Alcohol may increase risk of unwanted sexual activity – You did WHAT with WHO? What about condom use and safer sex? Difficult to communicate limits Regrets – Oh God!

Mixing Alcohol & Other Drugs Alcohol and other drugs can intensify effects of one another Marijuana – increase sedation (what a party killer) Cocaine – increase blood pressure/heart attack and stroke risk (not so good!) Sedatives – Severe drowsiness/depressed heart rate/pulmonary functions (definitely not so good!) Opiates – sedation (risk of overdose) Ecstasy – Russian Roulette

Reducing Risks Choose to not use – you’re not alone! Respect other’s choices – don’t pressure others Don’t feel pressured Slow your drinking – one per hour Alternate with water and/or pop Eat food – slow absorption Set a certain number/point (yes really!) Avoid shots/chugging/drinking games Don’t mix alcohol and other drugs Avoid driving (it really ain’t worth it) Have a buddy and/or safety system Designate a ‘sober’ partier – volunteer yourself!

Impaired Driving http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPBCXLkWuD8 Traffic crashes largest cause of death for ages 15-24 4 Canadians killed every day – 267 injured each yr (40% between 15 – 25 y/o) Do not drive after ANY drinking or drug use Do not get in/on any motorized vehicle with someone who has been drinking or using drugs Zero BAC for novice drivers with stiff penalties – Did you know? Drug Impaired Driving – yes they can determine that too now… What are the alternatives?
