Allotments in November

What is an allotment? An allotment is a piece of land that you or a group own and grow: crops flowers fruit You can grow these crops any time of the year which means no time to rest! You need to take good care of your allotment and plants, there is just enough daylight to clear an tidy up the allotment of any old crops in preparation for next year. Don’t leave the remains of summer crops to rot and harbour over winter. Picture of farmer digging some vegetables.

Harvesting Start to harvest: winter cabbage brussels sprouts leeks parsnips Wait until after a frost for parsnips because the chilling effect turns the starches into sugars and this gives them natural sweetness. Pick the Brussels sprouts working from the bottom of the stalk upwards to make sure that all the sprouts get a chance to swell. At the same time snap of any yellowing leaves at there base to ensure that there is good circulation around the plants. It also makes the sprouts easier to pick on cold, wet and frosty days, brrrr! Clear the ground of any remaining crops such as: celeriac, carrots, Florence fennel and put them into store before any hard frost are forecast. 9

Harbour means to grow old and turn un-edible. Harvest means to dig up a plant once it has grown. Slide 3: harvesting Circulation means to go around something. Slide 3 : Harvesting Preparation means to get ready for something coming up in the future. Slide 2 : what is an allotment? Slide 2: What is an allotment?
