Prepositions

Definition and function A preposition is a word used to show the relation of a noun or pronoun to some other word in the sentence. Prepositions are used to show where something is located or when something happened.

Catalogue aboard aside from despite near together within About at down of with without Above away from during off through According to back of except on throughout Across because of from onto till Across from before in opposite to After behind in front of out toward Against below in place of outside under Along beneath inside over underneath Along side beside inside of past until Along with between in spite of prior to unto Among beyond instead of regarding up Apart from but into round upon Around by like since with

Followed by a Noun A preposition is usually followed by a noun. It is never followed by a verb. By “nouns” we include: Proper nouns (dog, Chris) Pronouns (he, she, they) Noun group ( my first job) Gerund (swimming)

Nouns and Prepositions Prepositions are sometimes so firmly wedded to other words that they practically become one word. This occurs in three categories: nouns, adjectives, and verbs. I have a love for dogs. Chrissy has a Fondness for Beagles. Some people have a hatred towards dogs. I hope for a new puppy. He has an interest in dogs.

Adjectives and Prepositions He looked afraid of swimming. He was fond of the lake. She is interested in swimming. She was sorry for splashing the people. She was tired of treading water.

Verbs and Prepositions John apologized for his mistake. Matt had to ask for a pass back to class. I study for my Spanish test. Find out the truth. I work for a mean person. Look for my news paper please.

Prepositions of Place AT- for a point IN- for an enclosed space ON- for a surface At In On At the door In the garden On the wall At the corner In London On the floor At the top of the page In my pocket On the menu At the entrance In a building On the door At home In a boat On a train At work In a sky On the radio

Prepositions of Time AT- for a precise time IN- for months, years, centuries, and long periods On- for days and dates AT IN ON At noon In the summer On Sunday At the moment In May On New year’s Eve At 3 pm In the evening On my birthday

Bad Habits Unnecessary Prepositions We sometimes use prepositions in everyday speech when they are not needed. She met up with the new coach. The book fell off of the desk. Where did they go to? Where is the college at? She wouldn’t let the cat inside of the house.

Prepositional Phrases A group of words including a preposition and a noun, pronoun or group of words used as a noun. Prepositions can be showed as adverbs, adjectives, and nouns Examples: Julie discovered a pile of books hidden under the staircase. Adverb function He is the actor in the movie. Adjective function Under the stairs is where he hides. Noun function (under the stairs is the subject of the sentence)
