Make a copy of the “Heat Transfer Reading” in the content library and paste it into the “ISN” section of your notebook.

Heat Transfer I can explain how heat is transferred through convection, conduction, and radiation. I can give examples of how convection, conduction, and radiation occur every day in the real world.

3 ways that heat can be transferred The sun can heat things in 3 different ways. Reading: Class notes

Conduction Heat is transferred through direct contact (touch). Heat travels from the warmer object to the cooler object Examples: touching a stove and being burned, ice cooling down in your hand

Convection Read paragraphs #4 aloud Highlight definition convection Look at examples listed below. Which examples would show convection?

Convection Heat transfer through liquids or gases as particle circulate (rise and fall). Warmer areas of a liquid or gas rise (less dense) and then sink down when they get colder (more dense). Creates a circle, because of density differences Example: convection currents, water boiling in circles in a pot, greenhouse

Radiation Heat is transferred through space in the form of waves. Examples: Sun rays, a campfire, an open oven door, heat from a light bulb

Convection: Hands in Shape of Circle (shape of convection movement) Conduction: Hand to ear (directly touching ear) Radiation: Hands in front (as if feeling heat from stove/campfire)

Heat Transfer Lab (5 min. each station) At each station, observe what is happening by answering the questions. Station 1: Beads Observe what is happening to the beads in the beaker. Station 2: Rub Hands together Rub hands together for about 1 min, then put hands on face. Observe what is happening to the temperature of your face. Station 3: Heat Lamp Use the thermometers in each beaker to observe the temperature of the water with the lamp and the temperature of the water without the heat lamp.

Heat Transfer Lab Based on your observations, classify each type of heat transfer and record the definition using your tree diagram. Then, complete the Heat Transfer Classification (group) at the bottom of the lab and the “Popcorn Writing Prompt” on the back If finished, work on your comic strip.

After Lab: Label Complete Heat Transfer Writing Prompt & Diagram Heat Transfer Writing Prompt & Diagram: Draw and label three pictures showing how popcorn could be popped using each type of heat transfer (there should be a total of 3 pictures). Then describe underneath how it would show that particular type of heat transfer.
