Estimating the Cost for the Concrete Pad Civil Engineering and Architecture Unit 2 – Lesson 2.2 – Cost and Efficiency Analysis Reinforcing Bar Concrete has high compression strength, yet poor tensile strength. Rebar is added to increase the tensile strength. Project Lead The Way, Inc. Copyright 2010

Estimating the Cost of the Pad Estimating the Cost for the Concrete Pad Civil Engineering and Architecture Unit 2 – Lesson 2.2 – Cost and Efficiency Analysis Estimating the Cost of the Pad Rebar 3 in. edge dist. 6 in. lap [After the question is displayed, give students a chance to estimate the number of 10 ft pieces necessary. Then click to show the answer.] You will need nineteen full 10 ft pieces, plus nine 10 ft bars from which you will cut the 8 ft pieces. You will also need 10-10 ft bars from which to cut the 6 ft pieces. Order a total of 38 (= 19+9+10) 10 ft pieces. How many 10 ft pieces of rebar are needed? 38 Project Lead The Way, Inc. Estimating the Cost of the Pad Estimating the Cost for the Concrete Pad Civil Engineering and Architecture Unit 2 – Lesson 2.2 – Cost and Efficiency Analysis Estimating the Cost of the Pad Rebar Each piece of #4 rebar costs $4.78. 38 x $4.78 = $181.64 Other associated costs include material for forms, gravel, and labor. Estimating the Cost for the Concrete Pad Civil Engineering and Architecture Unit 2 – Lesson 2.2 – Cost and Efficiency Analysis Cost Estimate A forecast of the cost of a future project Prepared at different levels of a project Conceptual Design Construction Documents Bid Phase Includes Quantity take-off − Subcontractor quotes Material costs − Indirect costs Labor rates and costs − Profit margin Equipment costs Completed with cost estimating software The success of a building project depends heavily on accurate cost forecasting. Cost Estimates may be performed at several stages of the design and construction of a building project in an effort order to manage project costs. [click] A very general cost estimate may be performed at the conceptual phase of design before design documents are completely developed in order to determine the feasibility of a project. That is, a general idea of the cost is needed to decide whether it is financially profitable to proceed with the design and construction of a project or to choose between alternate designs. This cost estimate is often based on historical cost per square foot data [click] Once the construction documents are substantially complete (90% complete or more) a cost estimate may be performed to more precisely determine anticipated costs. This cost estimate is used to verify the conceptual cost estimate and identify cost overruns that have resulted from design modifications. Potential areas of cost savings can be identified at this point and design modifications made to reduce project costs. This estimate can also be used as a ball park estimate of the projected costs submitted by potential construction contractors in the bid phase. [click] In the bid phase of a traditional construction project, each contractor interested in building the project submits a “bid” which, stated simplistically, is the cost he will charge to construct the project. At this point, the construction documents are 100% complete and each contractor completes a cost estimate to predict the cost of construction that he uses to “bid” on the project. [click] A cost estimate will include many elements. We have only considered the cost of materials in this presentation, but a comprehensive cost estimate for a building project will include all of these items [see bullets]. Project Lead The Way, Inc.
