2 Starter/Bell Ringer Activity  Students, please take your seats with your assigned Teams.  Delegate 1 Team Member to be today’s Team Leader.  As a group, come up with an answer to this Question: What do all these cardboard boxes have in common?  Be prepared to share this with the class. 3 Refresh your Vocabulary  As a Class, let’s refresh our memory on a few key words:  Building Materials  Quantity vs. Quantity Survey  Estimate  Square footage  Volume vs. Area  Scale factor  Foot, Inch, Yard, Cubic, Square, Etc…  Common Denominator, Rounding, Fraction, Mixed Number, etc... 4 Let’s start with our Student Teams  With your Team, you will follow the Handout.  You will answer all 6 questions.  You will first answer all 6 questions using a Cardboard Box for measurements.  You will then answer all 6 questions again using the simple house floor plan handouts.  When your Team has answered all the questions, you will proceed on to the Individual Assignment. 5 Let’s work on our own now  On your own, you will follow the instructions at the end of the Handout.  You will need a piece of graph paper.  You will answer all 3 questions.  Write all your calculations and computations out to receive full credit.  When you finish the assignment, turn it in. 6 Wrap Up and Summary  What did we actually measure today?  What units/increments of measurement did we use?  What other units/increments of measurement CAN we use that are similar?  How do we know what unit we are using?  How do we know what unit we should be using?  Can we convert to that unit if we need to?
