BILL OF MATERIALS

BEGINNING THOUGHTS ► IDENTIFY ONE MACHINE THAT YOU WILL USE TO BULID YOUR CONCRETE FLOAT? ► WHY MUST YOU USE A RULER WHILE BUILDING YOUR CONCRETE FLOAT? ► WHAT TYPE OF WOOD ARE WE USING FOR THE CONCRETE FLOATS? ► 2 MINUTES

A bill of materials is a list and description of all the materials to be used in constructing a project. BILL OF MATERIALS INCLUDES: ITEM/PART NAME NUMBER OF PIECES TYPE OF MATERIAL SIZE OF PIECES DESCRIPTION OF PARTS TOTAL FEET

► UNIT COST ► COST ► Cubic measures are determined by multiplying thickness by width by length ► T” X W” X L”=TOTAL BOARD FEET ► GALVANIZE=IS TO COAT A METAL WITH ZINC. CADMION IS A SIMILAR METAL USED FOR RUST RESISTANT PLATING OF FASTNERS AND OTHER STEEL PRODUCTS.

► CALCULATING BOARD FEET: ► Lumber in the form of trees, logs, or rough lumber is measured and sold by the board foot ► A board foot is an amount of wood equal to a board 1” thick X 1’ wide X 1’ long. Or a board that is 1” thick X 12” wide X 12” long. ► A board foot is also 144 cubic inches. 1” X 12” X 12”=144 cubic inches!

► Tongue and groove boards have a tongue-like edge sticking out on one side and a groove cut into the other; which permits them to lock together ► Lumber is priced by the linear foot since tongue and groove boards are being used. This means that each “running” foot of length in the board is calculated into the cost. ► Calculating board feet requires computation of the volume of the board

► S4S=the boards are planed or surfaced on all 4 sides ► S2S=the boards are planed or surfaced on only 2 sides ► The number of pieces is helpful since it can be used to purchase materials efficiently. It is also needed in the calculation of total feet and total cost ► Pricing Materials: Lumber is priced by the thousand board foot This means=$300 for 1,000 board feet cost $.30 per board foot (300/1,000) This means=$300 for 1,000 board feet cost $.30 per board foot (300/1,000)

► Determining Board Feet: When a number is rounded up, it means the next higher whole number is used. In order to combine 3 items into 1 item in the bill of materials, the 2-3 ft. pieces are cut from one 6 ft. piece. A lot of material is used to determine the material that must be assembled from a project and its estimated cost. Several formats are used for bill of materials. These vary with the project being planned.

► The term “item” means a separate object ► THE IMPORTANT IDEA TO REMEMBER IN CREATING A BILL OF MATERIALS IS THAT ITEMS OF DIFFERENT TYPES, MATERIALS, SIZE OR COSTS MUST NOT BE MIXED AND LISTED AS ONE ITEM ► HAPPY BUILDING YOUR PROJECT

► Small pieces of Lumber: BF=thickness x width x length Large pieces of Lumber: BF=thickness x width x length 12
