2 English Measuring System
Inches, Feet, Yards How many inches in a foot? How many feet in a yard? How many 1/4 inches in an inch? How many 1/8 inches in an inch? Can you figure out the pattern? How many 1/16 inches in an inch? How many 1/32 inches in an inch? 12 inches (0’-12”) 3 Feet (3’-0”) 4 8 16 32

3 Locate the Ruler Mark Where is 1 3/4 inches? Where is 3 ½ inches?

4 Read My Line ¾” 1 ¼” 1 5/8” 2 3/8” 2 7/8” 3 ½” 4 1/8”

5 Read My Line – More Practice
Presentation Name Course Name Unit # – Lesson #.# – Lesson Name Read My Line – More Practice A = ¼ in. B = 𝟏𝟒 𝟏𝟔 = 𝟕 𝟖 in. C = 1 𝟏𝟎 𝟏𝟔 = 1 𝟓 𝟖 in. D = 2 𝟑 𝟏𝟔 in. E = 2 𝟏𝟒 𝟏𝟔 = 2 𝟕 𝟖 in. Take this opportunity to discuss reducing fractions. This is also a good time to reinforce the denominator based on the length of the line.

6 Architectural Units – Notation
Measurement GTT – Green Architecture Unit 7 – Lesson 7.1 – Architectural Basics Architectural Units – Notation Most architectural drawings use the architectural representation displaying measurements in feet and inches Example: 16′-2″ means 16 feet and 2 inches

7 Unit Conversion Sometimes we need to know a measurement in only inches or only feet (not feet and inches) Conversion factor A ratio (fraction) that relates a measurement in one unit to the same measurement in another unit Example: 3 feet = 1 yard 3 feet 1 yard is the conversion factor The ratio of feet to yards is 3:1

8 Unit Conversion or 12 in. 1 ft feet to inches: 1 ft = 12 in.
Introduction to Engineering Design – Lesson Measurement and Statistics Unit Conversion Desired Unit or 12 in. 1 ft feet to inches: 1 ft = 12 in. The ratio of inches to feet is 12:1 Given Unit miles to feet: 1 mi = 5280 ft or The ratio of feet to miles is 5280:1 5280 ft 1 mi Once you have identified the equivalency involving the given units and the desired units, create a ratio [click] with the desired units in the numerator and the given units in the denominator. [click] What is the conversion factor used to convert miles to feet? [allow students to answer] [click] Project Lead The Way, Inc. Copyright 2012

9 Unit Conversion 5 7 · 7 3 = 5 3 Conversion factor
Introduction to Engineering Design – Lesson Measurement and Statistics Unit Conversion Conversion factor Using a conversion factor to cancel unwanted units is similar to canceling common factors when multiplying fractions 5 7 · = 5 3 Canceling unwanted units using conversion factors is similar to canceling common factors when multiplying fractions. The numbers (or units) that are factors in both the numerator and the denominator can be canceled. [click] For instance, in this problem, you may cancel the 7s – one in the numerator and one in the denominator – [click] to give a result of 5/3. [click] Project Lead The Way, Inc. Copyright 2012

10 Unit Conversion 17.2 yd 1 = 51.6 ft 1 =51.6 ft
Introduction to Engineering Design – Lesson Measurement and Statistics Unit Conversion Example: Convert 17.2 yards to feet 17.2 yd 1 X 3 ft 1 yd = ft 1 =51.6 ft 3 ft = 1 yd [Click] Start with the original measurement. We will put it in the numerator over 1 to make it easier to see the fraction multiplication. What is the appropriate conversion factor to convert yards to feet? [allow students to answer] [click] The yards cancel [click] and you are left with 51.6 feet over 1. [click] Or just 51.6 ft [click]. Project Lead The Way, Inc. Copyright 2012

11 Unit Conversion 4 ft 1 = 48 in. 1 =48 in.
Introduction to Engineering Design – Lesson Measurement and Statistics Unit Conversion Your Turn: Convert 4 feet to inches 4 ft 1 X 12 in. 1 ft = 48 in. 1 =48 in. 12 in. = 1 ft [Click] Start with the original measurement. We will put it in the numerator over 1 to make it easier to see the fraction multiplication. What is the appropriate conversion factor to convert feet to inches? [allow students to answer] [click] The feet cancel [click] and you are left with 48 inches over 1. [click] Or just 48 inches [click]. Project Lead The Way, Inc. Copyright 2012

12 Unit Conversion 2 ft + 5 in. = 24 in. 1 +5 in. =29 in.
Introduction to Engineering Design – Lesson Measurement and Statistics Unit Conversion Example: Convert 2′-5″ to inches 12 in. = 1 ft = 2 ft 1 × 12 in. 1 ft + 5 in. 2 ft + 5 in. = 24 in in. [Click] Start with the original measurement. Since 5 inches is already in the correct units, we only need to convert the 2 feet to inches [click]. We use the same conversion factor that we used in the last example to convert feet to inches [click]. The feet cancel [click] and you are left with 24 inches over 1. Add the original 5 inches. 24 inches + 5 inches equals 29 inches [click]. =29 in. Project Lead The Way, Inc. Copyright 2012

13 Converting to Inches Your Turn 12 1 foot = _______inches
Measurement GTT – Green Architecture Unit 7 – Lesson 7.1 – Architectural Basics Converting to Inches Your Turn 12 1 foot = _______inches 1 foot 8 inches = ___________inches 3'-6″ = _______________inches 15′-11″ = _________________inches 21 ft = ____________ yards 12 in in. = 20 3 ft × 12 in. 1 ft in. = 42 Now you try to make each conversion. [Let students attempt each conversion, then click to show the answer.] 15 ft × 12 in. 1 ft in. = 191 21 ft × 1 yd 3 ft = 7

14 More Unit Conversions 4 blocks 1 in. If 4 Blocks = 1 Inch in length
What is the conversion factor for inches to blocks? Desired Unit 4 blocks 1 in. Given Unit How many blocks in 3 inches? 3 inches = _______________blocks 3 in. × 4 blocks 1 in. = 12

15 More Unit Conversions Your Turn If 4 blocks = 1 Inch in length
6 in. = __________________blocks 2 ½ in. = __________________blocks 4 ¾ in. = __________________blocks 6 in. × 4 blocks 1 in. = 24 2.5 in. × 4 blocks 1 in. = 10 4.75 in. × 4 blocks 1 in. = 19

16 Converting Architectural Units
Measurement GTT – Green Architecture Unit 7 – Lesson 7.1 – Architectural Basics Converting Architectural Units Converting units is a valuable skill that will help you solve many problems and avoid lots of mistakes. The process of converting feet-inches to decimal feet is simple and powerful. You will use this method to calculate area and perimeter in future activities. Example: Convert 7′−4" to decimal feet 7 ft + 4in.× 1 ft 12 in. The 7 feet is already in the desired units of feet. But we need to convert the inches to feet. The conversion factor must have the desired units on top. In this case, we want to convert to feet, so feet is on the top, and therefore inches is on the bottom. = ft = 7 ft ft 1 ft. = 12 in.

17 Converting Architectural Units
Measurement GTT – Green Architecture Unit 7 – Lesson 7.1 – Architectural Basics Converting Architectural Units Your Turn Convert 23′−6" to decimal feet 23 ft + 6 in.× 1 ft 12 in. Convert 16'-9“ to decimal feet 16 ft + 9 in.× 1 ft 12 in. = 23.5 ft = 23 ft ft 1 ft. = 12 in. [Allow students to attempt each conversion, then click to display the answer.] = 16 ft ft = ft

18 Converting Architectural Units
Presentation Name Course Name Unit # – Lesson #.# – Lesson Name Converting Architectural Units Students will want to convert 10’-5” to 10.5’. It’s very important to introduce this inconsistency now as we will encounter it throughout the unit. What are the dimensions of Bedroom #3? Convert to Decimal Feet Calculate the Area of this room 10′- 5″ x 12′- 5″ 10′ + 5" × 1 ft 12 in. x 12′ + 5" × 1 ft 12 in. = ′ x ′ sq ft
