S4 History Project The Added Value Unit (N4)

Why? Gives you opportunities for personalisation and choice (to learn about what you want to learn!) Is a requirement to pass N4 history (old general SG) Is a requirement for consideration for N5 history (old credit SG) Helps you prepare for assignment at N5/ Higher

Stage 1: Choosing a topic & question (AS 1.1) Task: Write a list (about 3-4) of historical topics you are interested in Some Ideas on next slide Once you have a list, pick the one you would like to focus on You have now chosen your topic area SC: I can choose an appropriate theme or historical event

Nazi Germany Vietnam War Russian Revolution Women & the vote WWI WW2 JFK The Cold War The American Civil War The Berlin Wall Slavery American Civil Rights Chernobyl Martin Luther King Malcolm X Irish history The Romans The Egyptians Nelson Mandela/ Apartheid Irish Immigration Titanic Any other relevant topic

Make up a question Your AVU must focus on the causes (why something happened) or the effects (the consequences) of an event or person A question which just asks you to describe something does not show your use of historical skills You will now make up a question using the structure help on the next slide SC: I can make up a question with minimal support

What effects did ___ have on ____? How did _____ affect ______? Task: Use the question help below to try and come up with a suitable question. When you are finished, ask your teacher to read your question and sign it off. Effects of an event What was the impact of… What effects did ___ have on ____? How did _____ affect ______? SC: I can make up a question with minimal support Causes of an event Why did… Why was there… What were the causes of… What were the main factors of… What contributed to the… How important was ____ to …?

Stage 2: Research (AS 1.2) Now that you have a question, you need to research your topic to find information You must use at least two different sources of information You can do this in class and at home The information must be relevant SC: I can collect relevant evidence from at least two sources of information

What kind of sources can I use? Primary or secondary interviews websites newspapers/magazines/books (print or electronic) visits or fieldtrips television/videos radio/podcasts diaries speeches photographs history books

Task: Collect research from at least two sources You should write down what the source is/ where you found it It is a good idea to collect all your research together i.e. on a sheet of paper or at the back of your jotter Example: Source 1: http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/guides/zn8sgk7/revision/5 BBC N5 History Website Information: On 1 April 1933 in Germany, a boycott of Jewish shops and other businesses took place. SA officers actively encouraged Germans to avoid entering Jewish places of work. Many Jewish shops were vandalised.

Best History websites (be careful with websites; not all are useful/ reliable ) http://www.johndclare.net/ http://spartacus-educational.com/ http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/ BBC Bitesize history http://www.bbc.co.uk/history - BBC History History Channel History.com (USA) http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/forkids/ (easier to understand) SC: I can collect relevant evidence from at least two sources of information

Using Primary/ Secondary sources

Example of unreliable source

Stage 3:Writing up your research (AS 1.3 & 1.4) There are three things you need to do here You must pick three key features/ themes of your topic to discuss You need to give two points of information for each feature/ theme Your information must be organised – in a table, under headings, in a mind map, paragraphs etc SC: I can identify at least three key features of a theme or event and give at least two points which describe each key feature I can organise and use the information collected to address the historical theme or event

Example 1: Why Did Women get the vote in 1918? (poster) The Suffragists Knowledge point 1 Knowledge point 2 The Suffragettes Work in WWI

Example 2: How did WW2 affect people in Scotland? Mind map Knowledge point 1 Evacuation Knowledge point 1 How did WW2 affect people in Scotland? Knowledge point 1 Rationing Knowledge point 1 The Blitz Knowledge point 1 Knowledge point 1

Example 3: Why Did Hitler come to power? Essay Paragraph 1 – The policies of the Nazi party (info and detail on what the Nazis offered to voters and why this attracted support) Paragraph 2 – Propaganda (info and detail on the propaganda posters, promises, flags & uniforms and why they gained support) Paragraph 3 – Hitler’s Speeches (info and detail on Hitler’s speeches, his delivery and audiences & why speeches gained support)

Stage 4: Describing the Causes/ Impacts of the Event (AS 1.5) You need to pick two main causes or impacts of your event/ theme and describe them i.e. two reasons WHY it happened OR Two effects of the event/ theme SC: I can describe at least two causes or impacts of the theme or event

I believe that the two main causes/ effects of ______ are I believe that the two main causes/ effects of ______ are. _______ is a main cause/ effect because… _______ is another main cause/ effect because…

Stage 5: Presenting your findings (AS 1.6) You should now put together everything you have done and present your AVU to be assessed You may present your findings in any way you wish – a poster, PowerPoint, essay, display book etc. Your chosen submission should also have a conclusion Communicate your findings and ideas clearly sum up your ideas, issues, findings or conclusions Use specialist vocabulary accurately – e.g. source, cause, impact, factor, social, economic, military, political. SC: I can Present my findings in response to the historical theme or event

Example structure 1.6 Part 1) In conclusion, There were many reasons for ________ such as… OR There were many effects of ________ such as… Part 2) I think the most important was ________ because… Part 3) In completing my AVU research I have used historical sources such as… i.e. History textbooks, historical websites, primary sources, BBC bite size

You must have your two sources clearly stated on your poster/ essay/ PP

Due Date for Submission: Thursday 1 June Final product & conclusion & questionnaire

Have you… Clearly shown your question? Included your two sources and where you got them (books must have name and author) Identified three areas of your topic and given two details of each? Clearly described two causes or impacts of the event? Use specialist vocabulary accurately? – e.g. source, cause, impact, factor, social, economic, military, political Put everything inside a neat cover sheet with your name on?

Stage 6: Evaluation Questionnaire (do this on paper and attach it to your AVU) 1. What topic/ issue did you choose to do your added value unit on? 2. Why did you choose that topic? 3. Where did you find the historical sources you chose? 4. How did you choose to present your information? 5. Why did you choose that method? 6. What did you enjoy about doing your added value unit? 7. What did you find challenging (difficult) about the added value unit?

Your teacher will attach one of these to your AVU and record whether you have passed or not yet passed each stage You must complete all stages to pass the AVU
