International Network on Household Water Treatment & Safe Storage Update on activities 2015-2016

Overview Advocacy and policy Inter-regional HWTS workshop Guidance and tools HWT Evaluation Scheme Communications Webinars on HWTS in emergencies HWTS session at WEDC Conference Learning and research HWTS massive online open course (MOOC) Presentation summarizes the Network’s main activities during the course of 2015-16; i.e. the activities listed above. In the area of advocacy and policy, an inter-regional joint workshop on Water Safety Planning (WSP) and Household Water Treatment and Safe Storage (HWTS) was held in Vientiane, Lao People’s Democratic Republic in November 2014. In March 2015, a strategic meeting of the WHO International Scheme to Evaluate Household Water Treatment Technologies was held to discuss key efforts to maximize the impact of the Scheme and ultimately, ensure that HWT protects users. Round I of the Scheme evaluation is complete, with the report to be launched in November 2015, and Round II is underway.

HWTS workshop: Addis Ababa, May 2016 Purpose Review status and progress in implementing national policies and strategies on HWTS Participants 50 participants from Ethiopia, Ghana and Kenya Talking points: The need to review the progress on implementing HWTS strategies and policies had been discussed at 2015 meeting All three countries had participated in previous regional workshops on HWTS convened by the Network Workshop was an opportunity to have a snapshot of what is going on Credit: WHO Ethiopia/Biniyam Fisseha Advocacy & Policy Guidance & Tools Communications Learning & Research

HWTS workshop: Key discussion points National working groups on HWTS are useful for catalysing action Resource mobilization for implementation of strategies is weak Tangible approaches for Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) are needed A number of issues were discussed, but we’ve highlighted just a few: Working groups on HWTS were highlighted as being as a useful platform through which national stakeholders could meet and strategize as they developed policies on HWTS. Policies / strategies on HWTS exist, but there are challenges in: resource mobilization coordination particularly at sub-national level Workshop report is available online PPPs are mentioned in strategies, but no tangible efforts are in place; e.g. beyond inviting private sector to meetings, there are limited efforts to engage / work together.
