War of 1812 The War of 1812 is America’s second war with Great Britain. It is also known as the “Second War of Independence.”

Preserving the Nation’s Independence: The War of 1812 Causes of the Conflict The British navy stopped US ships and seized (impress) U.S. sailors France and Britain had been fighting for years. The U.S. tried to stay out of the war. Some members of Congress felt it was the time to seize Canada from Britain British troops in Canada encouraged Native Americans to attack American settlements

Main Events of the War In retaliation the British occupied Washington DC and burned down the White House The U.S. tried unsuccessfully to invade Canada Most of the fighting took place around the Great Lakes and in upstate New York.
