Chapter 1 Lesson 1: Being an American What are some traditions that your family practices? Do you know what country(ies) your family is from? Why is the U.S. known as a “Nation of Immigrants”? Immigrants: People who move permanently to a new country.(Around 13% of U.S. pop. Was born elsewhere)

History of Immigration 20,000 years ago- 1st people arrive in land that would be U.S. (Asia- native americans) 1500’s- Spanish- FL, TX, CA 1600’s- French, Dutch, English began to arrive French: Canada, along Mississippi R, Louisiana Dutch: New Amsterdam (NY) English: E. Coast, Jamestown (1607) Late 1600’s – 1700’s: German, Swedish, Irish, and Scottish

A History of Immigration Early 1600’s – 1807: Over 500,000 Africans brought by force (Western & central Africa- “Middle Passage” 1830’s-1860’s- Over 5 million people came to the U.S. (Ireland, Germany, gold rush) 1860-1890- Another 10 million more (Denmark, Norway, Sweden) 1890- 1924: Around 22 million from Southern & Eastern Europe (Greece, Italy, Poland, Russia)
