2 Main Idea: In addition to its common values and civic unity, the U.S. benefits from its rich diversity

3 Civics- the study of the rights and duties of citizens.
I. What is Civics? (7) Civics- the study of the rights and duties of citizens. ***In ancient Greece and Rome (2,500 yrs ago), only men with property could be citizens.*** Today- Gender and wealth are no longer requirements for citizenship Citizen- A person with certain rights and duties. They are community members who owe loyalty to the gov. & are entitled to protection from it.

4 A Changing Society On the back of every U.S. coin is: E pluribus unum
“Out of many, one” Reminds us that many diverse citizens make up a strong, single nation

5 Most people are citizens of the country they live in.
Citizens have rights and responsibilities. They agree to accept the government’s authority and follow its rules.

6 II. A Nation of Immigrants (8-9)
All citizens of the U.S. descend from immigrants. First immigrants crossed the land bridge connecting Asia to North America.

7 First European settlers hailed from Spain in the 1500’s. Settled….
1. Florida, California, Southwest… 1600’s Immigration to U.S. 1. French settle in Canada & along Miss. River 2. English settle along the east coast creating 13 colonies. late 1600’s-1700’s 1. Germany, Netherlands, Ireland, Scotland, and Sweden joined the Eng. settlers

E. Today, Latin America accounts for most U.S. immigrants, followed closely by Asia. ***Current U.S. Population*** (325,750,000) 1. Caucasian= 69% 2. Hispanic= 14% 3. African American= 13% 4. Asian= 4% F. Western and central Africans were brought to U.S. through slave trade. ,000

10 III. A Diverse Population (9-11) Americans are ethnically diverse.
Religious diversity thrives in America. Christianity- 71% Islam- 1% Buddhism- 1% Judaism- 2% Hindu-1% Unaffiliated- 23% (3% Atheist % Agnostic) American culture is rich with varied influences.

11 Mid 1800’s....Farmers moved to cities for factory jobs.
A Growing and Changing Population (10) Mid 1800’s....Farmers moved to cities for factory jobs. Today, we have a service economy (less manufacturing jobs).

12 Americans live longer and more earn college degrees than ever.
Migration- Mass movement of people (after Civil War: African Americans moving north because of social strife…) Most populous regions 1. For most of nation’s history: Northeast Today: South Fastest growing: West Latinos (Hispanic Americans) are the fastest growing minority group in America.

13 IV. American Values & Institutions(11-13)
Americans share key values, and these values are reflected in the important institutions of American life. A) Values- broad ideas about what is good and desirable (shared by society) includes: freedom, equality, justice, unity, opportunity, democracy, respect, and tolerance (others???) ***These values builds unity

14 B) Institutions- sets of ideas that people have about relationships, obligations, roles, and functions *** Most important is the family Others: Religious Educational Social Governmental

15 Patriotism- A love for one’s country
Sources of American Unity 1. Common civic & political heritage based on founding documents 2. A single language of English 3. Americans show patriotism Patriotism- A love for one’s country

16 9/11/01- Acts of terrorism caused U.S. to unite.
Terrorism- use of violence against civilians to achieve political goals.
