Robotics and Automation How to Construct a Robot Part 4: Body Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2012. All rights reserved.

Construct a Robot by a Plan Sheet Basic Robot We are going to construct a robot part by part. The size and speed will be determined by its part. Later in the instruction, the size and speed will be determined by the controller. We will learn how to use a Plan Sheet, gather information, select the right part, and construct that part. Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2012. All rights reserved. First With Plan Sheet, either as one sheet or two sheets, lay out or draw the body for your robot. Start gathering information to construct the robot body you want. You can also draw the part on regular drawing paper. Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2012. All rights reserved.

The material might have a reaction on the robot, so a redraw may be in order. Keep in mind all the features that are needed (construction strength, speed, function, purpose, weight). Choose the best one, not necessarily the best drawing. Choose the best person and the right tool to make the part. Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2012. All rights reserved.

The students are going to use boxes as place holders to arrange and design the robot. Add special features to make it easer for the robot to perform its functions, to set its height from the ground, and to balance itself. Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2012. All rights reserved.

STORY BOARD CONSTRUCT A SHAPE FOR YOUR ROBOT Using the Plan Sheet given below, draw a body for your robot. Draw a three-view drawing of your robot’s body. Dimension the robot’s body. Choose the material you would use to construct the robot, and find the cost. Construct a plan of procedure you will use to put the body together. Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2012. STORY BOARD (cont’d) CONSTRUCT A SHAPE FOR YOUR ROBOT List the machines you will need to cut and construct the body. Use several drawings until you find the functioning body you like. Basic considerations - make the shape to best perform the task you need. Bring in the object close, and in position to best perform the task. 8. Below are several ideas you might consider.
