Images and other multimedia content used with permission. 2 Bindery Tasks In some large automated shops the cutting, folding, binding and packaging is one continuous process… In smaller shops, each of these is a separate process where workers do the tasks one at a time.

Images and other multimedia content used with permission. 3 Bindery Tasks Bindery projects vary from simple to quite complicated Leaflets and newspaper inserts need only to be folded and bundled Magazines are more complex and must be cut, stapled and prepared for mailing Hardback books are the most complicated of all and must be printed on large flat sheets that are folded into “signatures”

Images and other multimedia content used with permission. 8 Bindery Tasks Some required skills to work in the bindery Reading work orders Installing bindery machine devices (knives, guides, clamps) Setting machine controls Mounting rolls or reels of wire, cloth, paper, or other material onto machine spindles and filling paper feeders Making trial runs to verify accuracy of machine setup Monitoring machine operations to detect malfunctions Examining product samples for defects Cleaning and oiling machinery parts and making minor repairs Record-keeping
