Selection and Use of Input Devices and Input Media High Volume Devices Bury College

High Volume High volume, repetitive input demands high speed input devices that can work without human intervention Main requirements are Speed and Accuracy Need media that can be read directly by the input device attached to the computer. Automatic methods of data entry involve the ICT system being able to read the input data automatically.

Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) Can read marked sheets at 3000 sheets per hour Ideal for marking multiple choice question answer sheets Disadvantages Only suitable for capturing certain data Reject rate can be high Advantages Ease of use Cheap Fairly accurate – if forms filled in correctly Fast

Optical Character Recognition (OCR) Uses a scanner as input device + special software which looks at the shape of each character. Then, converts the image to text which is then passed to word- processor or database for processing

Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR) Numbers are printed on to the cheque in a special magnetic ink, which can be read at high speed by the MICR reader. Very expensive, used only for processing of cheques Advantages – Accuracy, read easily even if cheque has been folded, crumpled up etc, speed of reading. A cheque reader
