Erikson’s Young Adulthood Intimacy vs. Isolation In young adulthood, the adolescent leaves home and begins to establish intimate ties with other people though marriage or other important intimate relationships. A young adult who does not make other intimate connections may be condemned to isolation and loneliness

Dating The average age to start dating is between 12 and 13 Dating is a part of human mating process whereby two people meet socially for companionship, beyond friendship, or with the aim of each assessing the other’s suitability as a partner in an intimate relationship or marriage The average couple dates for 2.8 years before marriage

How do we date? Modern Out Dated Online Dating -Fast and Easy -Initially based on looks -Focused -Potentially Dangerous Face to Face -Spontaneous -Serendipitous -Structure -Less Familiarity

Robert Sternberg's triangular theory of love PASSION INTIMACY COMMITMENT

Sternberg’s ways to classify love Liking (intimacy only) Romantic love (intimacy & passion) Infatuation (passion only) Fatuous love (passion & commitment) Empty love (decision or commitment only) Companionate love (intimacy & commitment) Consummate Love (intimacy, passion, & commitment) Non love

Marriage Marriage is the vow to “keep themselves unto each other”- remain emotionally and sexually faithful to one another The average age to marry in the US is 26 for female and 28 for male Marriage is recognized throughout the world as a turning point in the lives of the man and woman. On average marriage lasts 14.5 years Generally married people are a little happier, healthier, and richer than never married people Increase of people 18 and up who have never been married 1970: 21.4 million compared to 1994: 44.2 million

family Societies are stronger if individuals sort themselves into families Many factors, both internal and external, contribute to whether a marriage will succeed or fail Studies have shown that couples with children are less likely to divorce than childless couples Men who are more involved with raising their children tend to have more stable marriages, because their wives are happier
