Presentation transcript:

Cell Structure and Function Learning Target: I  know the basic structure of plant and animal cells. I know the functions of cell organelles.

ORGANELLE: Mitochondria Function: -Area where oxygen combines with glucose (food) molecules to release energy (gives the cell energy) Plant or Animal: Both

ORGANELLE: Vacuole Function: -Storage area for food, water and waste Plant or Animal Cell: Mostly Plant

Organelle: Nucleus Function -Control center of the cell -Where DNA is located Plant or Animal Cell: -Both

Organelle: Cytoplasm Function: -Jelly like fluid that fills the inside of the cell -Allows for movement of chemicals in the cell Plant or Animal: Both

ORGANELLE: Ribosomes Function -Small round structures that make protein Plant or Animal Cell: Both

ORGANELLE: Golgi Body Function: Temporarily stores protein before it leaves the cell. Plant or Animal Cell: Both

ORGANELLE: Lysosome Function: -Contains enzymes that break down food or worn out organelles Plant or Animal Cell: Animal

ORGANELLE: Rough ER Endoplasmic Reticulum Function: -Tube like network that delivers proteins throughout the cell Plant or Animal Cell: Both

Organelle: Smooth ER Endoplasmic Reticulum Function: - Tube like network that delivers other materials throughout the cell Plant or Animal Cell: Both

ORGANELLE: Chloroplast Function: -Contains chlorophyll -Allows the plant to make food (photosynthesis) Plant or Animal Cell: Plant

Organelle: Cell Wall Function: -Tough outer layer of a plant cell made up of cellulose. Provides protection and structure to the cell. Plant or Animal Cell: Plant

Organelle: Cell Membrane Function: -Outer boundary of cells. (Protects and shapes) -Allows only certain materials into and out of the cell Plant or Animal Cell: Both

On your notes: Highlight the name of the organelles that are ONLY IN PLANT CELLS with GREEN Highlight the name of the organelles that are ONLY IN ANIMAL CELLS with RED Highlight the name of the organelles that are IN BOTH with BLUE Color the organelles.

Cell Organelle Headline Poster You will create a poster on your assigned organelle. The poster will include; A headline , Analogy or Advertisement that Describes the function of your organelle. The name of the organelle in your headline or analogy A picture that visually shows your headline or analogy. COLOR YOUR POSTER!
