Drama is… …any work that is written to be performed on stage.

Unlike Fiction, Drama… Is written to be performed on stage Is organized into acts and scenes Has stage directions Is primarily written as dialogue between characters

Drama Vocabulary ACT – a major division within play, similar to chapters in a book; Each act can be divided into smaller sections called scenes. SCENE – a section of a play’s plot occurring in one place at one time STAGE DIRECTIONS – instructions to the actors, director, and stage crew that describes the setting, character’s movements, and props; written in ITALICS or (parenthesis) throughout the play DIALOGUE – written conversation between 2 or more characters; brings characters to life and gives reader’s insight into the character’s qualities, traits, and reactions to other characters PLAYWRIGHT – the writer or author of the drama
