Statewide Digitization and the FCLA Digital Archive Priscilla Caplan, Florida Center for Library Automation Statewide Digitization Planners Meeting OCLC, October 2005

What is Digital Preservation? Digital preservation = steps to ensure digital materials remain usable over the long-term Digital preservation NOT = digitization for preservation Statewide Digitization Projects Planners Conference, October 2005

Statewide Digitization Projects Planners Conference, Documentation Understandability Authentication Authenticity Format strategies (migration, emulation..) Renderability Media management Viability Secure storage Integrity Description Identity Capture Selection Availability Preservation Pyramid Statewide Digitization Projects Planners Conference, October 2005

Digital preservation collaboratives Most collaborative activity in Europe National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program (NDIIPP) Some statewide initiatives addressing preservation University library consortia Statewide Digitization Projects Planners Conference, October 2005

Statewide Digitization Projects Planners Conference, State Universities FCLA Statewide Digitization Projects Planners Conference, October 2005

Characteristics of Producers Universities are distributed throughout the state Libraries use many systems for digital content, e.g. Ex Libris DigiTool CONTENTdm Institutional repositories Universities produce content in many ways, e.g. Library digitization projects Electronic Theses and Dissertations Scholarly e-journals Departmental publishing (websites, newsletters, etc.) Producers want control of their content and its presentation Rarely possible to control or limit formats used Statewide Digitization Projects Planners Conference, October 2005

Characteristics of the FCLA Digital Archive Preservation repository only – not for data entry, publishing, discovery, end-user access... Bilateral Agreement with each Producer (library) specifies what will be archived by “project” and file format Producers create Submission Information Packages (SIP) in specified format Producers can request dissemination of the content they provided – “Dark Archive” has no online realtime access Shared responsibility for preservation: Producers select, describe, submit and need to know when to request FDA guarantees availability of original submission and of usable version Statewide Digitization Projects Planners Conference, October 2005

Statewide Digitization Projects Planners Conference, Format treatment Treatment based on background reports and action plans Recognized formats can get full preservation treatment Files are localized, normalized, migrated as appropriate for format AIFF 1.3 AIFF-C 1.0 JFIF 1.02 PDF 1.2 – 1.6 Plain text TIFF 5.0, 6.0 WAVE XML 1.0 XML DTD 1.0 JPEG2000 JP2, JPX AVI Statewide Digitization Projects Planners Conference, October 2005

DAITSS is the software used by the FDA Statewide Digitization Projects Planners Conference, October 2005

Statewide Digitization Projects Planners Conference, DAITSS application Developed for the FCLA Digital Archive Based on OAIS functional model Designed to be usable in other contexts – customer tables, configuration tables, storage interface Allows for charging (although we don’t) Designed to be distributed as Open Source Could be back end to Institutional Repository or other system Designed to implement active preservation strategies: validation, localization, normalization, forward migration Designed to ensure integrity, authenticity, viability, renderability Statewide Digitization Projects Planners Conference, October 2005
