Basic Concepts ch1
Basic idea of DE Students and teacher are separated by distance and sometime by time. Since teachers and students are separated by distance, as a result it becomes necessary to introduce an artificial communications medium that deliver information and provides a channel for interactions between them.
Definition of of DE “Distance education is planned learning that normally occurs in a different place from teaching, requiring special course design and instruction techniques, communication through various technologies, and special organization and administrative arrangements (Moore & Kearsley, p.2.).” Distance education is a study of Learning and teaching Learning that is planned and not accidental Learning that is normally in a different place from teaching Communication through various technologies
Terminology associated with DE The following terms are those associated with DE. What are their definitions? How are they different from DE? Correspondence education e-learning (electronic, Internet) Asynchronous learning Open education, open learning Distributed learning
Why DE Increasing access to learning and training opportunities Improving cost-effectiveness of education resources ...
Levels of DE Single mode institution: all the faculty and staff of the institution are exclusively devoted to distance education (e.g. Athabasca University, http://www.athabascau.ca) Dual mode institution: institution that adds distance education to its previously established campus and class-based teaching (e.g. Penn State Worldcampus. http://www.worldcampus.psu.edu ) Individual teachers: The design, teaching, and administration of the programs rests with the on-campus teachers and administrators Virtual universities and consortia: (e.g NTU, Western Governors University, California Virtual University)
Activity 1 Identify examples of the four different types of distance education organization. Please also list advantages of the each type of distance education organization.
Distance Education System System: “a set of components of elements, interacting together towards a common goal” (Romiszowski, 1988. p.5). DE system consists of all the component processes that operates when teaching and learning at a distance occurs It includes learning, teaching, communication, design, management.
Components of DE A source of knowledge that is taught and learned Design of course materials Delivery of course materials Interaction via technologies Learners in their learning environments Management and Administration
Activity 2 With your partner, list main components that compose a distance education system based on reading assignments Think about the relationships between components and draw a model that describes the main components and their relationships
