Chemistry Part 2 Periodic Table

Periodic Table Atomic Number = # of protons If the atom is neutral: Atomic Number = # of electrons Atomic Mass = # of protons + # of neutrons # of neutrons = atomic mass - # of protons

Periodic Table Elements are in order of increasing atomic mass.

Periodic Table Periods: Horizontal rows. (1 to 7) Number of electron shells.

Periodic Table Groups: Vertical columns. (1 to 18) Share characteristics and properties. Same number of electrons in outer shell.

Periodic Table Metals Non-Metals Metalloids Share specific properties. Have properties of both metals and non-metals.

Periodic Table Alkali Metals Group 1 Silver colored metals Very reactive

Periodic Table Alkaline Earth Metals Group 2 Reactive

Periodic Table Transition Metals Groups 3 to 11 Have more than one charge

Periodic Table Halogens Group 17 Extremely reactive Form strong acid compounds when bonded to H

Periodic Table Nobel Gases Group 18 Unreactive (for the most part)

Lanthanides Outside periodic table Period 6

Actanoids Outside periodic table Period 7

Synthetic elements Elements from atomic #95 and above

Periodic Table Hydrogen is an exception: It can behave like an alkaline metal or a halogen.
