Personalizing It just Right for Special Areas!!! Tashika Truesdale, Ed.S. ESOL Teacher PL Facilitator High Point Elementary

Today’s Objectives Apply Understanding Make Meaning Build Knowledge Participants will be able to experience a personalized learning environment. Participants will know and be able to explain at least one possible strategy that enables personalized learning. Participants will be able to describe key characteristics of Personalized Learning at Fulton County Schools. Make Meaning Apply Understanding Build Knowledge

Personalization At Fulton County Schools

Varied Learning Strategies Making learning relevant by utilizing the following learning strategies to promote learning and maximize connections to the real-world: Utilize blended workshop models to include teacher-led instruction, digital learning (Redbird, iRead, iReady) independent and collaborative learning opportunities Give daily opportunities for inquiry-based learning for students to connect with real-world application in all grades and subject areas

Choice and Voice Making learning relevant by providing opportunities for increased student engagement through choice and voice in the classroom environment. *Create flexible learning spaces * Student-centered and the teacher acts as a facilitator *Provide self-paced learning for some skills in reading and math through Redbird, iRead, iReady, Reading Eggs, and Imagine Learning *Implemented inquiry-based learning daily that allows student choice in topics *Guide students to set personal goals and devise strategies for their learning paths

Choice with how students can demonstrate their learning Making learning relevant by encouraging students to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways using their own unique talents: *Discussion (ex: Socratic Seminars) * Modeling (ex: skits, student created videos, students teaching other students) *Student-reflection *Learning journals *Inquiry-based learning outcomes * Creative expressions based on their learning styles/ preferences (ex: learning contracts) *Weebly *Office 365 *Seesaw *ShowMe

Just-in-time direct Instruction Key Components of Just-in- time Direct Instruction: How do you do this? *Determine what your students already know. *Scaffold their learning based on their needs to get them to the end goal *Active facilitation ensures that students get support when they need it through the learning process *You are meant to guide students in making appropriate learning decisions within the framework of the choices that they are given * Students get only the DI that they need (ex: remediation, “expert or review”) *Students are guided in making their own learning decisions *Students get support when they need it

Digital devices can enhance personalized learning * Using technology devices does not equal personalized learning *Digital devices can provide students with avenues to learn via their own style *Digital devices can keep students motivated an engaged *Students can produce, publish, and present high-quality work products *Students can collaborate with their peers as well as their teacher *Faster performance feedback to students

Mastery-Based Assessments Before starting a new topic or unit, teachers need to find out what prior knowledge their students have Teacher-check ins need to happen periodically (this will allow teachers to see what students need remediation and what students are proficient and can move forward with their learning) Students have multiple opportunities to master the content and standards Summative assessments allow teachers and students to see what they learned

Flexible Pacing Independent Exploration & Reading Students move through content and standards as they demonstrate mastery of each target. Time and place are flexible while learning is constant.

Principals of Personalization In Fulton County Schools Students have available many strategies to help their learning (PL plans, portfolios, rubrics, online management and support, collaborative learning, PBL…) Students have access to just-in- time direct instruction Students have choice and voice * Students demonstrate their learning through mastery-based assessments * Students decide how to demonstrate their learning * Students are allowed flexible pacing * Students are able to help co-plan their learning

Time to Roll the Dice & Personalize IT!!!! *TES (blendspace) * Osmo *Padlet *Nearpod *Plickers *Seesaw *Explore Office 365 *Mobymax
