Creativity, Activity, Service CAS Creativity, Activity, Service

The CAS coordinator is responsible for providing the necessary access to the experience for coordinating the whole CAS team: supervisors, activity leaders, teachers etc for assisting the students in the process on reflection: i.e. guiding students in assessing the experience and developing abstract concepts and theories (ideas and plans) on the basis of what they have learnt from activities and from the project as a whole, through the constant guidance of supervising adult.

Why CAS? Experiential learning has the potential to change your life. Required for IB Diploma,

The AIM of the CAS is to provide students with a unique opportunity to challenge their views to develop critical thinking to develop awareness of the need and chances to become aware, active and compassionate citizens, by learning from their own personal experience through guided reflection

EXPERIENTIONAL EDUCATION C.A.S Is EXPERIENTIONAL EDUCATION i.e. LEARNING FROM EXPERIENCE. CAS aims at developing the personality of the students, helping them become MORE ACTIVE, COMPASSIONATE CITIZENS THAN THEY HAVE BEEN OTHERWISE. Learning has occurred only if there is an improvement.

Learning from experience is only possible THROUGH Associated, Ongoing, Guided REFLECTION ONGOING REFLECTION IS REFLECTION THAT OCCURS: BEFORE: SETTING GOALS DURING: MONITORING AFTER: EVALUATION and SELF- EVALUATION

A GOOD CAS PROJECT Is a new role for the student! Is a real task! Does have consequences! CAS Is Never Neutral Like every experience, it can only be good or bad depending on how the process of reflection is conducted!

The most meaningful CAS experience comes from spending time with others to build relationships and develop the self- worth of both server and served. In the design and construction of your CAS schedules you are reminded of the equal importance of all three areas CREATIVITY, ACTIVITY, SERVICE. There must be a balance between the three. Appropriate activities might include: physical assistance to the elderly helping with rehabilitation at the local hospital establishing and coaching a sports team for disadvantaged children establishing and leading a music ensemble for visually impaired people involvement in a theatrical production to which children are invited environmental restoration and protection Creating a sports club

Making Books for the orphanage Making Bears _ CAS students got creative making teddy bears which we can send to an orphanage in Georgia. (Creativity and service) Perhaps you could get a group together and make some soft toys. School newspaper debating clubs model united nations talent shows international nights learn a language, teach an academic subject. (creating handouts) multicultural day movie day Fashion show

Final interview 7 learning outcomes Yes or No How will you be evaluated? Successful completion of CAS is a requirement for the award of the IB Diploma. Final interview 7 learning outcomes Yes or No

What Is NOT CAS? any class, activity or project that is already part of the Diploma Program an activity for personal reward, financial or benefit-in-kind simple, tedious and repetitive work a passive pursuit, e.g. museum, theatre, exhibition, concert visits part of family or religious duty work experience that only benefits the student

fundraising with no clearly defined end in sight an activity where there is no responsible adult on site to evaluate your performance activities that cause division amongst different groups in the community working in an old people’s or children’s home when you: 1. have no idea of how the home operates 2. are just making sandwiches 3. have no contact at all with the old people or children 4. actually do no service for other people

Learning outcomes—THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT Learning outcomes—THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. THIS IS THE HEART OF YOUR PROGRAM. THIS IS WHAT YOU HAVE TO DEMONSTRATE.

7 learning outcomes Identify their own strengths and develop areas for personal growth Demonstrate that they have undertaken challenges, developing new skills in the process Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience Show commitment to and perseverance in their CAS experiences 5. Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively 6. Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance. 7. Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions

students must plan and complete a series of CAS activities that are 1 students must plan and complete a series of CAS activities that are 1. real, purposeful activities, with significant outcomes 2. personally challenging – tasks must extend the student and be achievable in scope and require: 3. thoughtful consideration, such as planning, reviewing progress, reporting 4. reflection on outcomes and personal learning. All CAS must involve learning. Students must demonstrate a reasonable balance of creative, activity, and service activities. Students must reflect on EACH their individual CAS activities. Students must reflect on their CAS program as a whole. Specifically: did you meet the personal goals that you set at the beginning of the program.

Students must complete at least one “super project” that involves collaboration and integrates at least two of creativity, activity and service, and is of significant duration. Students must demonstrate an 18-month commitment to CAS and must show evidence that some activities were NOT stand-alone, but that some activities were significantly involved over a period of time. CAS cannot just be a series of one- time projects. CAS cannot be completed in a short time span, then not worked on at all for long spans of time. Students must demonstrate that they have accomplished these 7 learning outcomes at some point during the 18-month CAS commitment.
