Some factors that influence the choices a teen makes about drug use may include: Peer pressure Family members Role models Media messages Perceptions of drug behavior Misleading information about drug abuse 2

Substance Abuse People abuse drugs for many reasons, such as the belief that drugs will help relieve problems. 3

Substance Abuse Some people turn to drugs because: They are trying to cope with stress and do not know how to deal with problems in healthy ways. They are seeking relief from physical or emotional pain. 4

Substance Abuse Personality Some people are naturally curious and may try drugs for the experience. Shyness or discomfort in social situations may lead others to use drugs. Tension, low self-esteem, and a poor self image are also factors that contribute to drug use. 5

Substance Abuse Peer Pressure Peer pressure is a strong motivator for people to use drugs. Some people may be influenced by others. Some people are risk takers. They may naturally be drawn to dangerous behavior. 6

Substance Abuse Peer Pressure Other reasons people may abuse drugs include: Values. Some may lack strong internal values. Boredom. Some wrongly believe that taking drugs provides pleasure. Escape from life’s problems. Some may use drugs as a substitute for something they are missing in their daily lives. 7

Open communication, positive family relationships, and strong opposition to drug abuse all help guide teens away from drugs. 10
