40 % of the land in the U.S. is publicly owned,meaning tax payers support the various types of land use Major US Public Lands include: National Resource Land – Managed by BLM National Parks and Monuments- National Parks System National Wildlife Refuges- US Fish and wildlife service National forests – us forest service Indian reservations- bureau of Indian affairs Military installations – department of defense

National Resource Land 269 million acres of land BLM Mission: It is the mission of the Bureau of Land Management to sustain the health, diversity and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. Administered by the Dept. of Interior Includes: energy and minerals (=300 additional acres subsurface) Forests,woodlands timber, forage wild horse and burro populations fish and wildlife habitat wilderness areas archaeological, paleontological, and historical site
