Presentation transcript:

Patterns for Praise (lesson 18) Theme: Praising God is the natural fruit of a vital relationship with God. Simply repeating the phrase “Praise the Lord” is far from true praise. Genuine praise springs from a heart that finds its highest joy in God.

How to Praise God Acknowledge Who He is – an invitation to bless the Lord (bless is a synonym for praise) Concentrate the whole person on worship – the intellect, volition, and emotion should all be focused on the object of praise – God. Be continually aware of His goodness – we are never to stop thinking about God and His goodness.

Where to Praise God In the congregation – A corporate body of believers is one appropriate setting for expressing to God the honor and glory that is due Him. In private – at times believers must get alone with God and direct their souls to Him.

What to Praise God for David praises God both because of Who He is and what He has done. His character – David reflects on several attributes of God that are praiseworthy. Merciful – God’s compassion and concern. Gracious – God’s desire to do good things for His people. Slow to anger – God’s patience with sinners. God’s faithfulness and love for His people.

What to Praise God For Continued His blessings – believers should praise God for what He does. Individual benefits – sample listing of many personal benefits. Forgives – God pardons our sins and restores fellowship Heals – God certainly is the Great Physician Who heals the body, but more importantly, He brings relief to the soul. Redeems – God helps His people in whatever they need. Satisfies – God’s goodness can fill up and satisfy spiritual hunger.

What to Praise God for Continued Corporate benefits – three benefits God gives to all His people. Deals righteously – He’s always steadfast in His purpose and just in His dealings. Reveals Himself – The Word of God is a wonderful possession. Rules over all – He has absolute power and authority.

Questions for in class On average, how much time do you spend in prayer per day? Do most of your prayers say the same thing (e.g., always starting with “Thank You for this day”)? Why? What kind of things do you usually pray for? Who do you pray for?

Memory Verse Psalm 40:3 3and you gave me a new song, a song of praise to you. Many will see this, and they will honor and trust you, the LORD God.
