Aim: Describe the British Takeover of India

British Expand Control over India Until the 19th Century, the East India Company ruled India with little interference from the British Government The company had its own army which was staffed by sepoys (Indian soldiers) British treasured India for its potential than its actual profit India was a major supplier of raw materials for Britain British considered India the brightest “Jewel in the crown.”- The most valuable of all of Britain’s colonies British set up restrictions that prevented the Indian economy from operating own its own Needed to buy British goods 2

British Transport Trade Goods India became increasingly valuable to the British after they established a railroad network Railroads transported raw products from the interior to the ports & manufactured goods Raw materials were agricultural products such as tea, indigo, coffee, cotton, & opium British shipped Opium to China in exchange for tea 3

Positive & Negative Impact of Colonialism Negative Side: British held much of the political and economic power British restricted Indian-owned industries British officially adopted a hands-off policy regarding Indian religious & social customs Positive Side: Laying of the world’s third largest railroad network was major British achievement Railroads enabled India to develop a modern economy & brought unity to the connected regions telephone & telegraph lines, dams, bridges, & irrigation canals enabled India to modernize Sanitation & public health improved Schools & colleges were founded Increase in literacy 4
