The British East India Company (BEIC)was formed at trading posts in Bombay and Madras  Mughal Dynasty kept European traders under control  In 1707 Mughal Dynasty was collapsing and losing control of its states 1757 Robert Clive led the BEIC against the Mughal Dynasty and won. BEIC was the leading power in India

4 BEIC’s rule in India The British East India Company eventually controlled what is now modern Bangladesh, most of Southern India, and the territory that surrounded the Ganges River BEIC ruled India regulated India without interference from the British government  The company even had its own army  The army was led by British officials and Indian soldiers who were called sepoys

5 Jewel in the crown India was a major supplier of raw materials
India had 300 million people  Britain sold British-made goods to Indian people for profit   India became hugely profitable and earned the name “Jewel in the Crown”  India couldn’t compete with Britain or operate on its own

6 British transport of trade goods
A railroad network was built in India  It was use to transport raw products to the port  Then from the port railroads transported British goods into India  The raw materials were grown/produced on plantations  Tea, indigo dye, coffee, cotton

It helped India to develop a modern economy  Also a modern road network, telephone and Telegraph lines, irrigation canals Literacy increased Ended local warfare among local rulers  But Britain held most of the political and economic power  Many villages suffered from cash crops

8 Sepoy Mutiny Despite benefits, many dislike British control in India
Rumor spread in 1857 that cartridges of the rifles Sepoy used were greased with beef and pork fat  To use the cartridges, soldiers had to bite off the ends India has two main religions: Hindu and Islam  Muslims can't have pork and Hindus don't eat beef

9 Sepoy Mutiny Cont. Sepoy soldiers refused to open the cartridges
Those that disobeyed were jailed Next day, May the sepoys rebelled  Sepoys took over Delhi  Took BEIC a year to regain control of India  British government ended the BEIC and took over India directly.

10 Salt March  The Sepoy Mutiny resulted in Britain gaining direct control of India  Mohandas Gandhi the leader of the Indian Independence movement  By 1930 Gandhi led a civil disobedience march to protest British rule  India received their independence in 1947
