5 minute Earth Science Density

What is density? Density is a physical property of matter. Density can not be measured but is calculated. Density is how much matter occupies a given space.

Let’s take a closer look. The next three diagrams show matter in an equal amount of space. Notice the first one has more matter than the other two. The first diagram is the most dense and the last is the least dense.

How do we measure matter? Matter is the material that makes up an object. Using a balance we can measure the amount of matter in an object. This is called mass.

The amount of space an object occupies is called volume. How do we measure volume? If it is a regular shape it can be measured and using a formula then calculated. Bar…V=LxWxH

Irregular objects or objects not easily measured, the volume can be measured by using the displacement method.

Density is the amount of material which occupies a space. -OR- Density is the mass in a given volume -OR-
