1 These two objects are the same volume, so why is one heavier?

2 Density Take a look at the two boxes below. Each box has the same volume. If each ball has the same mass, which box would weigh more? Why? The box that has more balls has more mass per unit of volume. This property of matter is called DENSITY.

3 Density = mass (g) volume (cm3)
Density is a measure of how many particles of a substance are in a given area/volume. It can be worked out using the following equation. Density = mass (g) volume (cm3) Solids are usually the most dense, followed by liquids and then gases.

4 Can you copy this please!
g/cm3 g Density = mass volume Or using the formula triangle; m D x V cm3

5 Density of Solids Solids have their particles closely packed together.
In liquids the particles are further apart. With gases the particles are widely spaced apart from each other.

6 Density of Solids Different solids have different densities.
The steel ball is denser than the apple because it has MORE particles in the same volume.

7 Density of regular shapes
volume = length x width x height density = mass volume mass using a scale height width length

8 Density of liquids density = mass volume Volume Mass of liquid
Mass of cylinder Mass of liquid and cylinder density = mass volume

9 Density of irregular shapes (1)
mass Difference in level gives the volume of the shape Density = mass/volume

10 Density of irregular shapes (2)
mass Displacement can volume of object Density = mass/volume

11 What is Density? How do objects float? How do substances float?
Density is the amount of mass in a volume. It tells us how tightly matter is packed together. What is Density? How do objects float? How do substances float?

12 What is density? You can make an object more dense by decreasing the volume. What is Density? How do objects float? How do substances float?

13 What is Density? How do objects float? How do substances float?
You can make an object more dense by increasing the mass, but keeping the volume the same. What is Density? How do objects float? How do substances float?

14 What is Density? How do objects float? How do substances float?

15 How do substances float?
