Types of Schools School types in Slovakia: State schools (mostly) Schools owned by church Private schools All types of schools are financed from the state (private schools have fees - that's they are not completely financed by the state).

Stages of the educational System Pre-primary education is the first stage of the education system. It is provided by kindergartens for children between ages of three and six. Primary and lower secondary education is organised as a 9 year long single structure system (primary education lasts 4 years, lower secondary education lasts 5 years).

Stages of the educational System Upper secondary education starting age is 15 and it is organised as general, vocational and art education. General upper secondary education is provided by four, five or eight-year Gymnasia (age of 11- 18). Secondary vocational schools also provide educational programmes of post secondary education and tertiary professional education. (Study at secondary vocational schools lasts from two to five years). Art education is provided by conservatories, which are a specific type of school providing lower and upper secondary education as well as tertiary professional education.  

Stages of the educational System Higher education is provided at three levels - Bachelor, Master and PhD study programmes – fully within the competence of universities and higher education institutions. Adult education (universities of the third age, language education). It takes place in further education institutions, schools and non-school institutions.

Kindergarten for children 3–6 years of age, it teaches basic knowledge and skills, develops communication skills, thinking and interests and prepares children in general for primary school

Primary School- Stages   Primary school is divided into two stages. First stage lasts for four years (1st – 4th year of study). Second stage lasts for five years (5th – 9th year of study). After graduating from the primary school children continue their study at secondary school after passing the entrance examination. Slovakia has 10 years of compulsory education. (between the age of 6 and 16) and pupils complete it by finishing the first year of upper secondary education or by reaching the age of 16.

Primary education There are 9 grades and are divided into: Level 1 (junior: 1st-4th grade) and Level 2 (middle: 5th-9th grade) schools. Pupils at primary schools receive marks from 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 1 is the best, 5 is the worst.

Lessons on the second stage of primary school include: Slovak language and literature Mathematics Foreign language; English (1st) / German or Russian (2nd) Physics Chemistry Biology Geography Technical Education Drawing, Education by Art Physical Education History Religion or Ethics Citizenship Music

Secondary School There are a few types of secondary schools in Slovakia. 1. Grammar school, (Gymnazium): 4-8 years; provides general secondary education and prepares for further study at universities and other higher education institutions.  2. Specialized Secondary School: 4-5 years; provides specialized education and usually prepares students for further study at higher education institutions.  3. Conservatories: 4-5 years; special type of professional school providing specializing in fields such as Music, Singing, Dancing and Dramatic Arts.  4. Vocational School: 2-4 years; prepares students for careers that are based in manual or practical occupations.

Universities in Slovakia Full university education in Slovakia lasts 5 years, some faculties are organized in 6 year study, e.g. human medicine (MUDr.). University study in Slovakia is organized in the following stages: Stage 1: bachelor study lasts 3-4 years and graduates obtain Bachelor title (abb. Bc.).  Stage 2: lasts 2 years and graduates the following titles: Master (abb. Mgr.) or Engineer (abb. Ing.), doctor title is based on studied branch (MUDr., MVDr., MDDr.) At present there are 20 public, 10 private and 3 state universities and colleges in Slovakia

CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS Education of children with special educational needs is carried out from pre-primary level up to the upper secondary level in special or mainstream schools. In some schools the child with special educational needs may be integrated with its peer into a class (individual integration) or into a special class at mainstream school among children with the same kind of handicap (social integration).

Holidays A school year in Slovakia at primary and secondary schools consists of two terms. The first term starts on 2nd September and ends at the end of January, the second term starts on 1st February and lasts until 30th June. Students go to school 5 days a week, from Monday until Friday. Summer holiday in primary and secondary schools in Slovakia is from the 1st of July until the 31st of August.
