Today’s Heroes Often Include: “Super Heroes” -superhuman abilities, good values, defeats evil enemies -born with their powers “Crime Fighters” -modern heroes that fight against evil to help make society a better place -not born with powers, but always strong

“The Cowboy” -western celebrated hero -encounters enemies and defeats them -rewards given “The Doctor” -a hero with modern scientific tools -rushes around helping the injured -strong morals “The Spaceman” -encounters fabulous forces in the universe and must overcome them using advanced technology and intelligence

Since the beginning of time, there have been stories of heroes with incredible abilities. In ancient societies, men and women believed in heroes who were great warriors with special powers. Today, heroes have powers that relate to modern technological advances and those who fight crime. Heroes are always present, trying to solve problems in society.

WHAT IS MYTHOLOGY? It is the study of MYTHS -what is a myth? Myths attempt to explain such things as: NATURE MAN GODS -heavens -life/death -where? -seasons -victories -role? -geography -defeats -why?

MYTHS ARE STORIES!! -About supernatural beings from a long time ago! -cultures such as Greeks, Romans and Celtics all have their own unique myths or stories about their gods and goddesses

A HERO WITH A THOUSAND FACES Child of Destiny: -in mythology, a hero is pre-selected -this means they are born with their power or develop them when they are very young -these powers are often unrecognized and the child hero grows up as an abused child, orphan or outcast of society -with a childhood filled with struggle, the hero gains strength and learns to overcome his or her struggle

POWER: Most heroes have special abilities These powers let them accomplish things that the rest of humanity cannot Most heroes have a “Mark of Importance,” or a birthmark or scar that shows they are a true hero Powers can be anything from physical strength to spiritual powers

THE HERO’S JOURNEY BIRTH AND CHILDHOOD DEPARTURE THE QUEST THE RETURN

WHY IS MYTHOLOGY IMPORTANT? Because it is interesting, entertaining and shows us how the ancient people viewed their world. Also, because you will find CONSTANT references to mythology in your life. Examples: in religion, in history, in the arts, in literature, in music and in advertising.
