The Victoria & Albert Museum

The Victoria & Albert Museum The Victoria and Albert Museum is situated in London. It is the world’s largest museum dedicated to the decorative arts and design. Decorative art is about the design and manufacture of beautiful objects that also are functional. Fine art are paintings, drawings, photography and sculpture that is produced purely to look at and appreciate.

Decorative Arts Architecture Ceramics (pottery) Fashion Textiles and fabrics Interior Design Printing

The Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans had always decorated their homes. (Paintings, hieroglyphs, mosaics and Greek vases are examples). When these civilisations died out, so did this practice. In places like China, India and the Middle East (Islamic Art) this continued.

In Europe, fine art was always given far more importance over decorative art. This changed in the second half of the nineteenth century through the work of William Morris and the ‘Arts and Crafts Movement’ which encouraged beauty in everyday objects
