Levy Herlimtan Computer Art Period 4 9/4/14

The Metropolitan Museum of Art (colloquially The Met) is the largest art museum in the United States and one of the ten largest in the world. Its permanent collection contains more than two million works, divided among seventeen curatorial departments. The main building, located on the eastern edge of Central Park along Manhattan's Museum Mile, is by area one of the world's largest art galleries. There is also a much smaller second location at "The Cloisters" in Upper Manhattan that features medieval art.

Collections The Met's permanent collection is cared for and exhibited by seventeen separate curatorial departments, each with a specialized staff of curators and scholars, as well as four dedicated conservation departments and a department of scientific research. The Great Hall

Permanent Collections  Ancient Near Eastern art  Arms and Armors  Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas  Asian art  The Costume Institute  Drawings and prints  Egyptian art  European sculpture and decorative arts  Greek and Roman art  Medieval art and the Cloisters  Etc. Dürer Melancholia I by Albercht Durer

History  The New York State Legislature granted the Metropolitan Museum of Art an Act of Incorporation on April 13, 1870 "for the purpose of establishing and maintaining in said City a Museum and Library of Art  The museum first opened on February 20, 1872, housed in a building located at 681 Fifth Avenue in New York City  John Taylor Johnston served as its first president  Between 1879 and 1895, the Museum created and operated a series of educational programs, known as the Metropolitan Museum of Art Schools, intended to provide vocational training and classes on fine arts Opening reception in the picture gallery at 681 Fifth Avenue, February 20, 1872

"Ugolino and His Sons" by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (1865–67). "This sculpture depicts the gory tale of Ugolino and his sons starving to death and his sons begging their dad to eat them! See Dante’s Inferno Canto 33. The gnawing hunger and hellish dilemma are powerfully conveyed in this Carpeaux masterpiece."

Reflection Overall, I like this museum and I would like to visit this museum for real. I personally interested in the Arms and Armor in Medieval Europe. European warriors of the early Middle Ages used both indigenous forms of military equipment and arms and armor derived from late Roman types. I’m also interested in fashion in European Armor from 1000 to 1500. Only scattered documentary and archaeological evidence is available for the Migration period and early Middle Ages(1000-1300). And the fourteenth century is often referred to as the "age of experimentation." At the beginning of this period, by about 1420, the development of full plate armor—a defense enclosing almost the entire body with a system of steel plates articulated by rivets and leather straps—was complete. I like this museum because of the vast collections they have.
