Central Processing Unit Brain for the computer Directions from the mouse and keyboard go to the CPU to be processed Located inside the system unit

Hard Drive Long term memory for the computer Usually located inside the system unit

CD/DVD Drive Used to play CDs and DVDs Blank CDs and DVDs can be used to save information Often located on the system unit

Power Power buttons often have this symbol Monitor and the system unit have a power button

Audio Ports Used to plug in headphones and microphones Located on the system unit

USB Ports Square hole for hardware to plug into the computer Very common type of plug Examples of hardware that uses a USB port Printers Keyboards Digital Cameras Flash Drives

Window Area on the screen where you view a program Click and drag to move a window Screen can have more window open at the same time Options available on all windows Close Maximize/Restore Minimize

Minimize Used to hide a window from view Minimized windows are displayed in the taskbar

Maximize Used to make a window cover the entire screen Maximizing a window is useful for focusing on one task

Restore Used to make a window smaller than the entire screen Restored windows can be made bigger and smaller and can be moved around the screen
