Geography Vocabulary Geography – the study of earth’s surface, atmosphere and people Latitude – measure distance North and South of the Equator Also known as parallels Longitude – measure distance East and West of the Prime Meridian Also known as meridians Equator – 0 degrees latitude, separates the Northern and Southern hemispheres Prime Meridian – 0 degrees longitude, separates the Eastern and Western hemispheres Title – indicates the purpose of the map Scale – tells distances on a map Key - show the meaning of symbols on a map Also known as a legend

Compass Rose (North, East, South, West) Inset Map – a smaller map located on a larger map for the purpose of showing details that cannot be seen on a larger map Physical Map- indicates landforms such as deserts, mountains, and plains Political Map – indicates governmental boundaries of countries, states and counties. Continent – one of the largest 7 land bodies on the earth Ocean – one of the four largest bodies of water on the earth Country - an specific area that has defined boundaries and is controlled by a single government

Latitude Also called parallels Measure distance north/south of the Equator
Longitude
Longitude Also called meridians Measure distance east/west of Prime Meridian Prime Meridian runs through Greenwich, England.
Equator – imaginary line that runs around the earth between the North and South Poles; zero degrees latitude Prime Meridian – line running from the North Pole to the South Pole through Greenwich, England; zero degrees longitude

Inset Maps A small map on the same sheet of paper as a larger map that provides additional information that cannot be shown conveniently on the larger map.
Absolute Location The exact location of something on the earth’s surface expressed by a coordinate system such as latitude and longitude. Example Florence, SC is located at 33 degrees north latitude and 80 degrees west longitude!!!
Relative Location A location of a place in relation to another place Example Mexico is located south of the United States.
