Agenda 1/27/10 Forms of Energy (#1). Energy Conversion. Homework: Forms of Energy Worksheet (#2) Life Science #6 due next Tuesday

Forms of Energy Mechanical Energy: Definition energy associated with any type of motion. Examples: Wind, water in a waterfall, running, sound (vibration of matter).

Heat Energy: Definition  The internal motion of particles in matter. Examples: Rubbing you hands together converts mechanical energy into heat energy. * Heat flows from a warm object to a cooler object.

Chemical Energy: Definition  Energy found in chemical bonds, releases when bonds are broken. Examples: Digesting food, when fuel is ignited chemical energy is released.

Electromagnetic Energy: Definition  Moving electric charges. Examples: Electricity, light, radio waves.

Nuclear Energy: Definition  Energy produced from the splitting or fusion of an atom’s nucleus. Examples: Nuclear power plants, energy from the sun.

Law of Conservation of Energy Energy can not be created or destroyed (it just changes into another form – conversion). Example: chemical energy in gasoline is transformed into mechanical and heat energy in an engine.

Energy Conversion Worksheet Fill in the blanks with the appropriate forms of energy. Electric Fan Answer: Electromagnetic  Mechanical A bonfire Answer: Chemical  Heat Photosynthesis Answer: NuclearChemical  Mechanical
