2 Forms of Energy Physical Science

3 Energy is the ability to do
Energy is measured in work. joules

4 Forms of Energy Energy appears in many forms. There are five main forms of energy. Mechanical Heat Chemical Electromagnetic Nuclear See if the students can name the forms first – then click through…

5 Mechanical Energy Energy of motion. Water in a waterfall Wind
Examples: Water in a waterfall Wind Moving vehicles Sound Other examples from the class???

6 Mechanical Energy When you kick a football, you give mechanical energy to the football to make it move.

7 Mechanical Energy When you throw a bowling ball, you give it energy. When that bowling ball hits the pins, some of the energy is transferred to the pins.

8 Heat Energy/Thermal The internal motion of atoms.
The faster the molecules move, the more heat energy is produced. Example: Friction Discuss common kinds of friction students may be familiar with – hands rubbing together – tires- engine parts Candles – One lit candle in a car can increase the temp 2 degrees – if you are in a snow bank and cannot run the heater…

9 Chemical Energy Energy that exists in the bonds that hold atoms together. When bonds are broken, chemical energy is released. Remind students of video of the sodium metal in water – produced fire – Chemical Change…

10 Energy that exists in the bonds that hold atoms together.
When bonds are broken, chemical energy is released.

11 Chemical Energy Examples: Digesting food…bonds are broken to release energy for your body to store and use.

12 Fuel and food are forms of stored chemical energy.

13 Electromagnetic/Light/Electric /Radiant Energy
Moving electric charges. Explain the picture with the xrays…

14 Examples: Power lines carry electricity Electric motors are driven by electromagnetic energy Light is the form of energy (X-rays, radio waves, etc.)

15 Nuclear Energy What is the difference between fission and fusion? Which one is/was being used in this state?

16 When the nucleus of an atom splits, nuclear energy is released.
Nuclear energy is the most concentrated form of energy.

17 The Law of Conservation of Energy
Energy can be neither created nor destroyed by, it can only be converted from one form to another.

18 All forms of energy can be converted into other forms.
Energy conversions All forms of energy can be converted into other forms. Green plants convert the sun’s energy (electromagnetic) into starches and sugars (chemical energy).

19 Other energy conversions
In an electric motor, electromagnetic energy is converted to mechanical energy. In a battery, chemical energy is converted into electromagnetic energy.

20 Energy Conversions In an automobile engine, fuel is burned to convert chemical energy into heat energy. The heat energy is then changed into mechanical energy.

21 Use the video to add to your notes Sound is mechanical
Video Time Use the video to add to your notes Sound is mechanical Radiant is electromagnetic

22 Brainpop

23 Pg 74 and 75 Complete the sheet, then add your own And 15.

24 Pg 77 Explain in full sentences what type or types of energy change is going on

25 Pg 76 - 2 examples of energy change
Picture What change is happening
