1 Energy Transfer and Conservation
Physical Science Project Energy Transfer and Conservation

2 Types of Energy Mechanical. Chemical. Electrical. Thermal.
Electromagnetic. Nuclear.

3 What is MECHANICAL energy?
Energy that helps objects MOVE. Two categories: Kinetic Energy Moving energy. Potential Energy Stored energy. Mechanical energy puts something in motion.

4 What is MECHANICAL energy?
The bowling ball has MECHANICAL energy. It rolls down the alley towards the pins… When the ball strikes the pins, the mechanical energy is transferred.

5 What is MECHANICAL energy?
Sound from vibrations

6 What is CHEMICAL energy?
Energy that is available from the release of CHEMICAL REACTIONS. Chemical energy is the energy stored in food, wood, coal, petroleum and other fuels. When these compounds are broken, the stored chemical energy is released in the form of HEAT or LIGHT.

7 What is CHEMICAL energy?
The CHEMICAL bonds in the match stick store energy. That energy is released when you strike the match. HEAT and LIGHT are both given off.

8 What is CHEMICAL energy?

9 What is ELECTRICAL energy?
Energy caused by MOVING ELECTRONS. As a type of KINETIC ENERGY, electricity is produced when something upsets the balancing forces between protons and electrons in atoms. Easily moved through power lines and converted to other forms of energy.

10 What is ELECTRICAL energy?
Electricity is made by a generator… That generator sends the electricity through the power lines… To your home/business where it is converted into something useful.

11 What is ELECTRICAL energy?

12 What is THERMAL energy? Energy from MOVING PARTICLES.
As a type of KINETIC ENERGY, thermal energy is known as HEAT energy. Thermal energy can do work for us, or be a result of doing work.

13 What is THERMAL energy? The faster the molecules move…
The hotter an object becomes… The more thermal energy is possesses.

14 What is THERMAL energy?

15 What is ELECTROMAGNETIC energy?
Energy from (visible or invisible) LIGHT. Known as RADIANT energy, this category includes all waves. Radio, TV, infrared, visible, ultraviolet (UV), microwave, X-ray, Gamma ray.

16 What is ELECTROMAGNETIC energy?

17 What is NUCLEAR energy? Energy locked in the NUCLEUS OF AN ATOM.
The force that bind the nucleus together. Gives off HEAT and LIGHT. The energy is released when the atoms… Combine together called FUSION. Split apart called FISSION.

18 What is NUCLEAR energy? Nuclear power plant SPLITS ATOMS = FISSION
The Sun COMBINES ATOMS = FUSION

19 Law of Conservation of Energy.
Energy cannot be CREATED or DESTROYED. It can only be ALTERED from one form to another. Energy is recycled through the environment; it never spontaneously appears or disappears.

20 Draw a flow map showing the flow of energy transformations in a car from starting vehicle to driving. Use as many types of energy as possible.

21 Energy Transfer Sound (mechanical) Electrical Thermal Electrical
Chemical Light (Electromagnetic) Electrical
