Science Review for Volume Quiz October 24, 2017

The amount of space an object or liquid takes up. What is volume? The amount of space an object or liquid takes up.

How do you find the volume of a regular solid object?

You must show the following three steps: 1.) V = L x W x H 2.) V = _______ cm x ________ cm x _______ cm 3.) V = ________ cm3 Measure the object in cm using a metric ruler or meter stick. Volume of a solid is measured in cm3. *Remember to put your finger on one vertex and measure the three edges that come off of it

How do you find the volume of an irregular object?

An irregular object has an odd shape and is difficult to measure An irregular object has an odd shape and is difficult to measure. You find the volume of an irregular object using water displacement. Steps: 1.) Measure and record volume of water in graduated cylinder 2.) Add object and record new measurement 3.) Subtract volume of water from volume of water + object Include units - (cm3) since you are finding the volume of a solid. *Remember: 1mL = 1cm3

The amount of matter in an object. What is mass? The amount of matter in an object.

How do you find the mass of an object?

1.) Place the object on the pan of a triple beam balance 2.) Start with the middle beam – move the rider to the right until the beam hits the bottom – then slide the rider back one notch. 3.) Repeat with the rear (back) beam. 4.) Slowly move the front rider until the little lines on the right side line up, indicating that it is balanced. 5.) Add the masses on each beam – this equals the total mass of the object in GRAMS (g).

How do you find the mass of a liquid? First find the mass of the liquid in the container on the triple beam balance. Find the mass of the empty container. Subtract the mass of the container from the mass of the liquid in the container. Add units - g

What units do you use to measure the length of an object or the distance of something?

Meters (M)– length Centimeters (cm) – length Millimeters (mm) – length Kilometers (Km) - distance

What units are liquid volume measured in?

Liquid volume is measured in mL Remember: the curved line formed by the liquid in the graduated cylinder is called the meniscus. *measure at the bottom of the meniscus at eye level *Remember to check the scale on the graduated cylinder (what do the marks go up by?)

What units do you use to measure the volume of a solid?

The volume of a solid is measured in cm3.

Be able to draw and measure lines in cm and in mm using a metric ruler.
