But what have these got to do with medicine? Capitalists Factories Steam Trains Railways Cities Mass production Child labour Steel Industrial Revolution Poverty But what have these got to do with medicine?

Starter: What changed during the Industrial revolution? A period of great change as new industries developed rapidly as a result of a number of new inventions e.g. steam trains, factories. Activity: Look at the picture on the next page and write down as Many things that have changed for this town during the Industrial revolution. 4 Minutes

Britain in 1750: Britain in 1900: Before Industrial Revolution: After Industrial Revolution:

Activity: Turn to P.18 Look at the Tombstones on P.18. What things can you tell about life expectancy from the details on these tombstones from 1842. Look at Source A and the bulletpoints on P.19. Make a list of all things that made people unhealthy (also could use text-P.19). Extension: What factors do you think could solve those problems?

Back to Back Houses You need to get into pairs. One of you will describe, one will draw. You need to try and draw the cross-section of house, using the description from your partner. No cheating!

Q) What was a back to back house? Can you use all of the key words below...? small, close, cellar, family, water pump, toilet, drain, cramped, sewage 2. What do you think the health dangers were of living in these houses? 3. Who do you think these houses were built for, and why were they built in this way?

With the source sheets... You each have a source sheet. Read the sources. In your books summarise into three key points. Each must refer to at least one source as evidence.

For example... ... Urbanisation I think ????? because ???? suggests that... ????? is important because, as we can see from source ?????? Source ???? shows us the importance of ??????

With the source sheets... Read the sources. Summarise into three key points. Each must refer to the sources as evidence. You have FIVE minutes to do this.

In your groups... Take it in turns to explain your three key points about the ‘factor’ you have been given. Everyone in the group should write these down. You each have two minutes to explain your factor.

Explain your three key points and support them with sources. Time guidelines... max 2 minutes each: Explain your three key points and support them with sources.

Do you have something like... Urbanisation: People moved from the country to the city to find work Many children were now being forced to work long hours in hard jobs. Lots of pollution made the cities unhealthy places to live

Do you have something like... War and Conquest: Nursing became more professional under the influence of people like Florence Nightingale Lots of wars meant lots of practice and chances to experiment for the doctors! Europeans moving into hotter climates introduced doctors to new diseases and cures.

Do you have something like... New Technology: Railways, the telegraph and steamships allowed people, ideas and items to move around more quickly. Better steel allowed for the invention of the syringe. Better glass allowed for the invention of the medical thermometer and microscope.

Do you have something like... Government: The government started to build better sewer and drainage systems. The government passed laws (Public Health Act 1848 for example) to improve the environment in the cities. People began to study how the poor lived and suggest solutions (e.g. Edwin Chadwick)
