MS-PS-c: Design, Construct, and test a device that either minimizes or maximizes thermal energy transfer by conduction, convection, and/or radiation.

Your team’s task: Use the provided materials to make a container that will retain the four chips of ice frozen for the longest possible time. NO other ICE or WATER can be used with container.

Learning Objectives Understand the student-centered vision of the NGSS. Focus on the three dimensions that are foundational to each standard including disciplinary core ideas, cross-cutting concepts, and with special emphasis, the science/engineering practices. Identify free online resources to help better prepare for new standards. Determine the steps for implementing the NGSS. Review each goal, stress the emphasis for today is on the first goal – others won’t matter if don’t get the 1st one Rename – Meeting Goals

What’s in the Folder Agenda NGSS Example A New Conceptual Framework Exploring the New Standards – Science Teacher (NSTA) Science Standards Require a Teacher-Learning Rethink – Education Week (Nov 2012) Holding Heat/Monet Hall Problem – 5E Model Example of how “Practices” are used to develop standards Evaluation/EILA Review each goal, stress the emphasis for today is on the first goal – others won’t matter if don’t get the 1st one Rename – Meeting Goals

Collaborative Effort Review each goal, stress the emphasis for today is on the first goal – others won’t matter if don’t get the 1st one Rename – Meeting Goals

Tablecloth Activity Review each goal, stress the emphasis for today is on the first goal – others won’t matter if don’t get the 1st one Rename – Meeting Goals

Vision of the Framework Number off 1 – 9, form groups with like number Read assigned section Create a tablecloth Rotate around the tablecloth Prepare to share whole group Provide explanation and main ideas from your assigned section 30 seconds/group! As an aside, discuss how the movie strategy can be used with kids – like we did to provide introductory overview, as a review, etc.

“Engaging in the practices of science helps students understand how scientific knowledge develops (Framework, pg. 42)…developing evidence-based models, arguments, and explanations is key to both developing and demonstrating understanding of an accepted scientific viewpoint (Framework, pg. 48).” Quote to reinforce key ideas in Ch. 1 and 2

What does Achieve say about the Vision of the NGSS? Stephen Pruitt Video Review each goal, stress the emphasis for today is on the first goal – others won’t matter if don’t get the 1st one Rename – Meeting Goals

What Resources are Out There? www.NSTA.org – free webinars http://www.nextgenscience.org/ www.Youtube.com – Bozeman Science http://phet.colorado.edu/ - interactive simulations w/Texas Instruments

Quickly review the organization of the standards pages, participants can refer to their handout. To really understand the standards and expectations, I think it’s important to understand the format.

Structure of the Framework: Three Dimensions Scientific and Engineering Practices (Blue) Disciplinary Core Ideas (Orange) Crosscutting Concepts (Green) Review each goal, stress the emphasis for today is on the first goal – others won’t matter if don’t get the 1st one Rename – Meeting Goals

Science and Engineering Practices Asking questions (science) and defining problems (engineering) Developing and using models Planning and carrying out investigations Analyzing and interpreting data Using mathematics, information and computer technology, and computational thinking Constructing explanations (science) and designing solutions (engineering) Engaging in argument from evidence Obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information Review each goal, stress the emphasis for today is on the first goal – others won’t matter if don’t get the 1st one Rename – Meeting Goals

Disciplinary Core Ideas Physical Sciences Matter and its interactions Motion and stability: Forces and interactions Energy Waves and their applications in technologies for information transfer Review each goal, stress the emphasis for today is on the first goal – others won’t matter if don’t get the 1st one Rename – Meeting Goals

Disciplinary Core Ideas Life Sciences From molecules to organisms: Structures and processes Ecosystems: Interactions, energy, and dynamics Heredity: Inheritance and variation of traits Biological Evolution: Unity and diversity Review each goal, stress the emphasis for today is on the first goal – others won’t matter if don’t get the 1st one Rename – Meeting Goals

Disciplinary Core Ideas Earth and Space Sciences Earth’s place in the universe Earth’s systems Earth and human activity Review each goal, stress the emphasis for today is on the first goal – others won’t matter if don’t get the 1st one Rename – Meeting Goals

Disciplinary Core Ideas Engineering, Technology, and the Applications of Science Engineering design Links among engineering, technology, science, and society Review each goal, stress the emphasis for today is on the first goal – others won’t matter if don’t get the 1st one Rename – Meeting Goals

Seven Crosscutting Concepts Patterns Cause and effect Scale, proportion, and quantity Systems and system models Energy and matter Structure and function Stability and change Review each goal, stress the emphasis for today is on the first goal – others won’t matter if don’t get the 1st one Rename – Meeting Goals

Standards: “Nexus” of 3 Dimensions Not separate treatment of “content” and “inquiry” (No “Chapter 1”) Curriculum and instruction needs to do more than present and assess scientific ideas – they need to involve learners in using scientific practices to develop and apply the scientific ideas. Crosscutting Concepts Core Ideas Practices

Analysis of Draft for Energy Analyze sample page for MS-PS3 Energy How to read the NGSS Vision of experiences needed to meet performance expectations (standards) Connections To math? To ELA? Handout sample of draft standards pages for SPM for K, 2, 5, MS, and HS. Copy front only so participants can lay out side-by-side to analyze. Use the bullets to guide the analysis – again looking across grades.

From AAAS as quoted in the Framework, pg. 83 “Some important themes pervade science, mathematics, and technology and appear over and over again, whether we are looking at an ancient civilization, the human body, or a comet. They are ideas that transcend disciplinary boundaries and prove fruitful in explanation, in theory, in observation, and in design.” From AAAS as quoted in the Framework, pg. 83
