Overview and Updates

Outcomes  Discuss the development process of the NGSS  Provide information regarding the NGSS and relationship to CCSS

Goal of NGSS Develop standards that will be rich in content and practice, arranged in a coherent manner across disciplines and grades to provide all students an internationally benchmarked science education. Disciplinary Core Ideas Crosscutting Concepts Science and Engineering Practices

NGSS vs CCSS Focus on Content Standards and Practices Privately Funded May be adopted fully or partially Literacy in Science Convened by State Schools Officers and Governors Must be adopted in its entirety Science Testing is mandated by Federal Requirements

California is 1 of 26 Lead State Partners

NGSS Development Process 1998 Current Science Standards are adopted July 2011 A Framework for Science Education is released Sept 2011 CA joins NGSS development process as lead state Spring 2012 NGSS public comments Jan 8- 29 2013 Draft is released and reviewed again ~ Spring 2013 NGSS released for adoption November 2013 Adoption of science standards (SB 1200 – revised SB300)

Two major goals addressed in A Framework for K-12 Science Education are: educating all students in science and engineering and providing the foundational knowledge for those who will become the scientists, engineers, technologists, and technicians of the future. A Vision for K-12 Science Education

Three Major dimensions:  Scientific and engineering practices  Crosscutting concepts  Core ideas in four disciplinary content areas Practices Content Crosscutting

Conceptual Shifts in the NGSS 1. K–12 Science Education Should Reflect the Real World Interconnections in Science 2. Science and Engineering Practices and Crosscutting Concepts should not be taught in a vacuum; they should always be integrated with multiple core concepts throughout the year. 3. Science concepts build coherently across K-12 4. The NGSS Focus on Deeper Understanding and Application of Content 5. Integration of science and engineering 6. Coordination with Common Core State Standards

Dimension 3: Disciplinary Core Ideas Physical Sciences PS 1: Matter and its interactions PS 2: Motion and stability: Forces and interactions PS 3: Energy PS 4: Waves and their applications in technologies for information transfer Life Sciences LS 1: From molecules to organisms: Structures and processes LS 2: Ecosystems: Interactions, energy, and dynamics LS 3: Heredity: Inheritance and variation of traits LS 4: Biological evolution: Unity and diversity Earth and Space Sciences ESS 1: Earth’s place in the universe ESS 2: Earth’s systems ESS 3: Earth and human activity Engineering, Technology, and the Applications of Science ETS 1: Engineering design ETS 2: Links among engineering, technology, science, and society

Public Draft of NGSS Available now at http://www.nextgenscience.org/next-generation- science-standards http://www.nextgenscience.org/next-generation- science-standards Arranged based on the Core Ideas Public Comment open until January 29, 2013
