Adapting Lessons to NGSS Nicole D. LaDue, Assistant Professor Department of Geology and Environmental Geosciences June 20, 2014

Plan for the next hour… I.Look at some resources II.Evaluate an existing lesson III.Make a plan for adapting to NGSS IV.Evaluate your own lessons

Reminder: Integration of 3 Dimensions:

Disciplinary Core Ideas PHYSICAL SCIENCES PS1: Matter and Its Interactions PS2: Motion and Stability: Forces and Interactions PS3: Energy PS4: Waves and Their Applications in Technologies for Information Transfer LIFE SCIENCES LS1: From Molecules to Organisms: Structures and Processes LS2: Ecosystems: Interactions, Energy, and Dynamics LS3: Heredity: Inheritance and Variation of Traits LS4: Biological Evolution: Unity and Diversity EARTH AND SPACE SCIENCES ESS1: Earth’s Place in the Universe ESS2: Earth’s Systems ESS3: Earth and Human Activity ENGINEERING, TECHNOLOGY, AND APPLICATIONS OF SCIENCE ETS1: Engineering Design ETS2: Links Among Engineering, Technology, Science, and Society Science and Engineering Practices 1. Asking Questions (for science) and Defining Problems (for engineering) 2. Developing and Using Models 3. Planning and Carrying Out Investigations 4. Analyzing and Interpreting Data 5. Using Mathematics and Computational Thinking 6. Constructing Explanations (for science) and Designing Solutions (for engineering) 7. Engaging in Argument from Evidence 8. Obtaining, Evaluating, and Communicating Information Crosscutting Concepts 1. Patterns 2. Cause and Effect: Mechanisms and Explanation 3. Scale, Proportion, and Quantity 4. Systems and System Models 5. Energy and Matter: Flows, Cycles, and Conservation 6. Structure and Function 7. Stability and Change www.nextgenscience.org

Reminder: Performance Expectations: S/E Practice + Crosscutting Concept + Disciplinary Core Idea Performance expectation

I. Resources http://www.bozemanscience.com/next- generation-science-standards/ Rethinking Laboratories – Volkmann & Abel EQuIP http://www.nextgenscience.org/resources

II. Evaluate existing lesson Science in your Shopping Cart (Lesson #5) 1.What are the core ideas? 2.What are the scientific practices? 3.What are the cross-cutting concepts?

III. Plan for Adapting to NGSS 5-PS1-4: Conduct an investigation to determine whether the mixing of two or more substances results in new substances. S&EP: Conduct an investigation Core Idea: mixing of two or more substances results in new substances CCC: results (cause & effect) http://www.nextgenscience.org/5ps1-matter-interactions

III. Plan for Adapting to NGSS MS-PS1-2. Analyze and interpret data on the properties of substances before and after the substances interact to determine if a chemical reaction has occurred. [Clarification Statement: Examples of reactions could include burning sugar or steel wool, fat reacting with sodium hydroxide, and mixing zinc with hydrogen chloride.] [Assessment boundary: Assessment is limited to analysis of the following properties: density, melting point, boiling point, solubility, flammability, and odor.] S&EP: Analyze and interpret data Core Idea: before and after the substances interact to determine if a chemical reaction has occurred CCC: properties of substances http://www.nextgenscience.org/msps1-matter-interactions

III. Plan for Adapting to NGSS MS-PS1-3: Gather and make sense of information to describe that synthetic materials come from natural resources and impact society. [Clarification Statement: Emphasis is on natural resources that undergo a chemical process to form the synthetic material. Examples of new materials could include new medicine, foods, and alternative fuels.] [Assessment Boundary: Assessment is limited to qualitative information.] S&EP: Gather and make sense of information Core Idea: synthetic materials come from natural resources ETS: impact society http://www.nextgenscience.org/msps1-matter-interactions

III. Plan for Adapting to NGSS Inquiry: Planning & Carrying Out Investigations Analyzing & Interpreting Data Constructing Explanations Core Ideas: Solubility Properties of Polymers Engineering & Technology Societal Impacts

IV. Evaluate your lessons Which S&EP, Core Ideas, CCC, and ETS are related? How can you make this activity more student- centered & inquiry based?
