Do Now: Turn to page 82 The “Littluns” 10/22 Aim: How do the power dynamics work in Golding’s Lord of the Flies? Do Now: Turn to page 82 The “Littluns”

Write 2-3 sentences answering the following in your notebooks: Why does Maurice feel the “the unease of wrongdoing” (84)? Why does Golding point out how Henry “trie[s] to control the motions of the scavengers. He made little runnels that the tide filled and tried to crowd them with creatures. He became absorbed beyond mere happiness as he felt himself exercising control over living things” (85).

Analyze When Roger throws rocks at Henry why is there “a space round Henry, perhaps six yards in diameter, into which he dare not throw. Here, invisible yet strong, was the taboo of the old life. Round the squatting child was the protection of parents and school and policemen and the law. Roger’s arm was conditioned by a civilization that knew nothing of him and was in ruins” (87)?

Answer the Aim How would your describe the power dynamics of life on the island? Who is in charge? What dwindling authority still lingers? How does this power dynamic break down from the most powerful to the least? Is this similar to real life?
