Markup of Educational Content Frida Sandgren frida.sandgren@ub.uu.se Electronic Publishing Centre Uppsala University Library Electronic Publishing Centre – Uppsala University Library

Markup of Educational Content Explore and develop tools and methods for the creation and management of modularized and portable digital content in educational settings. Enable use and reuse of document content in various fields of application and for various (end-) users. Fields of application: Teaching, Learning, Research publications Users: Teachers in creating learning objects or collections of educational documents; Scholars / Content providers in document creation / production process End users: Students or categories of students with various needs or requirements Electronic Publishing Centre – Uppsala University Library

Background Funded by VINNOVA Oct 2003 – Sept 2006 Cooperation between: CINS (Center for IT in Northern Sweden) and DNU, Umeå: http://www.snic.se/ Digital Literature: ILU, Uppsala University and KTH, Stockholm http://www.skeptron.ilu.uu.se/broady/dl/ Ekelunds Förlag: http://www.ekelunds.se/ The Electronic Publishing Centre at Uppsala University Library: http://publications.uu.se/epcentre/ Myndigheten för skolutveckling http://www.skolutveckling.se/ The Royal Library: http://www.kb.se/ Electronic Publishing Centre – Uppsala University Library

Original / Additional Content Markup Content Markup: Describes the content of document A complement to structure markup Original Markup: Markup within the document. Created during the document creation process Additional Markup: Additional markup after creation process. Based on annotation techniques Original / Additional markup  Different points of view but methods are non-exclusive: Source Document – Original Markup  Fields of application  Additional Markup ( knowledge based, time influence)  New field of application etc. Electronic Publishing Centre – Uppsala University Library

Procedure step by step Fields of Application : Source Document Original Content Markup Fields of Application : Additional Content Markup Field of Application Field of Application: Document content in interaction with users. Links between marked up elements and context information such as authority files or vocabularies E.g. Creation of learning objects

Work Packages A tool and methods for original content markup Electronic Publishing Centre A tool and methods for additional content markup CINS ; DNU TEI based markup Digital Literature Electronic Publishing Centre – Uppsala University Library

Original Content Markup of Academic Resources Development of a tool for basic content markup of academic resources Basic content: Proper names Geographical places Notions of time Tool: module-based and user-friendly …Which easily integrates into the author’s natural workflow. (Integration into well known software for text editing (Office, Open Office etc.) …Which supports and facilitates the work performed by the author in creating content /structure marked up text. The process of using data originally entered by the document author as the basis for creation and reuse of structure -marked up academic resources, is embodied in the DiVA Publishing System. Electronic Publishing Centre – Uppsala University Library

DiVA (Academic Archive Online) Publishing System The DiVA Publishing System -developed and maintained by the DiVA Project team within the Electronic Publishing Centre at Uppsala University Library. Structural mark-up is created by using templates for word processors. Once the document is converted from the template into XML the data can be reused, displayed and disseminated in different formats (e.g. as XHTML or PDF web pages, MARC 21 catalogue records, or Dublin Core OAI records). User interface in DiVA 2 (releases in fall) takes advantage of marked up structure of documents (table of contents, search, references and links to authority files). Electronic Publishing Centre – Uppsala University Library

Goals & desirables Integration of new tools into DiVA Workflow DiVA Document Format Authority name files (personal names, institutional names, geographical places) Dates Implementation: Textbook Electronic Publishing Centre – Uppsala University Library
