Anatomical Terminology

Anatomy: Study of the structure of body parts and their relationship to one another.

Anatomical Position: Your reference point Erect with feet together Palms face forward and thumbs point away from the body

Directional terms: Superior- toward the head end, upper part Inferior- away from the head end, lower part Anterior- in front Posterior- behind Medial- midline of body

Directional terms: Lateral- away from the midline Proximal- closer to the body trunk Distal- farther from the body trunk Superficial- at body surface Deep- more internal

Regional terms: specific areas within major body divisions Sagittal plane- vertical plane that divides the body into right and left parts Frontal plane- (coronal plane) vertical plane divides the body into anterior and posterior (front and back)

Regional terms: Transverse plane- (horizontal or cross section) runs horizontal dividing the body into superior and inferior (top and bottom)

REMEMBER THE MEDICAL EXAMINER OR CORONER EXAMINES THE BODY TO FIND CLUES OF WHAT HAPPENED.
